Leopold Marcus was born February 24, 1831, in the City of Poznan, Wlkp., Poland . He came to the USA in 1849. His first residence was in the city of Dunkirk, N.Y. Thereafter, in 1862 he moved to the city of Buffalo, where he resided until the day of his death. He was elected Sergeant of Company D, 68th Regiment, Thirty-second Brigade, Eighth Division of the Militia of the State of New York, February 1, 1858. On the first call of President Lincoln in 1861 he volunteered, and received his commission as First Lieutenant, September 23, 1861, in Company H, 72nd Regiment, N.Y.V., Army of the Potomac, being part of the famous Excelsior Brigade commanded by General Daniel E. Sickles. During the Battle of Williamsburg, in May, 1862, Lieutenant Marcus was severely wounded by being shot through the neck. By reason of this wound he became incapacitated for further duty, and was obliged to resign from the service, which took place in July, 1862. He was invalided home, and from that time on made Buffalo his permanent residence. The remainder of his life was spent in the mercantile business in Buffalo. As a successful merchant, public-spirited citizen and genial companion Mrr Marcus was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was a member of Bidwell-Wilkeson Post, G.A.R., Department of New York; Parish Lodge F.& A.M., and R.A.M. That as a mark of respect to the memory of our late companion the Committee submit the following resolution:

Resolved, That this Commandery received the announcement of the death of Lieutenant Leopold Marcus with sorrow, and will remember him as a brave soldier, an accomplished gentleman and a genial companion further, Resolved, That this Commandery condoles most sincerely to his bereaved family, and that a copy of these resolutions be sent to them in token of the same.
