1852 Santa Cruz, California, USA Isaac Brownstone, a native of Germany, came to California, USA in 1852. His firm established general merchandise stores in the cities of San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Watsonville and later in Selma and Sanger.

His parents came from Germany many years ago. The family moved to San Francisco when Joseph was very young. He took a full course of study in the Pacific Business College, finishing in 1879. He moved to Selma in 1880 and was employed in the the Western Union Telgraph office, being the first operator the town had. He was a Book-keeper for his uncle, Henry Brownstone, devoting his time full time to mercantile business in 1883. In 1885 he purchased his uncles business in the first store established (by Henry) in Selma and, with his father Isaac, operated that store under the name I. Brownstone & Sons. Joseph later became vice-president of the Selma Water Company, the first vice-president of the Selma Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West, and district deputy of the I.O.O.F. at Fresno

21 September 1885 Selma, California, USA A dispatch from Selma yesterday was received by the father of J. Brownstone reporting that the store of J. Brownstone & Co. had been burned at an early hour and that only the books and a few goods were saved. J. Brownstone had left on the afternoon train (to San Franciscoss) to make arrangements for rebuilding. The store was insured for $10,000 (total) by four companies.
