the Altheimer family took the Altheimer name after the town of Altheim,when the German government forced the Jews of their area to adopt Germanic surnames.Unlike some German Jewish families, the Altheimer family did have a family name before this change. It was something along the line of Alvers;Alves;Avers. This was the name they had when they were expelled from Spain in 1492. In 1492 the throne of Spain expelled all the Sephardic Jews.

Joseph?s family was descended from Spanish Jews named Alvers, who had fled to Germany after the great expulsion under Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. They settled in Altheim and ultimately took the name of that city.
