(Patrick Noel Ryan) had an unexpected visit from a German in a Junckersaircraft in January 1941 who removed his front door while destroying two neighbouring houses.... notwithstanding Ireland's neutral status. The damage was extraordinarily close to one of the very few synagogues in Dublin. One of the destroyed houses had been vacated the previous year by a Edward Plant. Within 24 hours of this rare bombing, there was a further single bombing in Terenure, Dublin which is some miles away. The Luftwaffe managed to destroy the very house that Edward Plant had moved into! He survived but could never work out why Hitler was gunning for him.
time in the 1970's. The Baader-Meinhof group//Red Army Faction had a temporary alignment with the IRA in Ireland and in the course of their activities bombed the German Legation offices on Ailesbury Road, Dublin 4. We lived opposite the building and took a hit with 37 windows lost. Fortunately my father was in the back room at the time and his window was sucked outwards and not blown inwards.
As an addendum, my father was targeted for a third time in his life. He was a judge in the Special Criminal Court dealing mainly with IRA atrocities. The IRA planted a bomb under his courtroom in Letterkenny Co Donegal but the culprits managed to set themselves on fire in the process and all was revealed before detonation time.
