Below is what my Mom, Helen Nathan Stone, told me about her father:
Mom told us about her father, who I never knew, as he died the year I was born. Her father, Sol Nathan, had a brother Charlie who came to this country from Germany in the middle of the 19th century. He founded a dry goods company called the Charles B. Nathan Company in Sacramento. Charlie sent for his brother Sol in Wroclaw, Silesia, Poland) and he came to Sacramento when he was 14 years old. Mom told us that her father went to night school and educated himself. He became a Shakespearean scholar and a great lover of Dickens and other 19th century English novelists.
According to Mom, her mother and father were very happily married. She recalled that her father, as the head of the family, was always a very important person to them. He was interested in many things. He was president of the local reformed Jewish Temple at one time. Mom thought it was the first reformed temple west of the Rockies. As a Shakespearean scholar, he led the Shakespeare Club. She said that he had a fantastically deep voice although he was a very small man. He read beautifully and so received great pleasure out of leading the Shakespeare group, according to Mom.
Sol Nathan left Uncle Charlies establishment because his cousins had graduated from the University of California, USA and he thought that they would inherit the Charles Nathan establishment. So he opened his own store called The Hub and it was known as the Working Mans Store.
