Humphrey Marks owned 640 acers of Land on little Stephens creek in Charleston SC dated March 27, 1785. The Humphrey Marks family owned a shop on the corner of King and George streets on March 12, 1798. Humphrey alsou owned a house on the corner of King andu John streets ( three story House, front of house facing King )
By 1828 Humphrey and Frances had moved to Columbia SC... They lived in a house onu u Richland Street that extended to Assembly street. This Richland Street property is now the location of the Columbia City Hall and adjoining parking lot. Humphrey and Frances also owned Marks' Porter House and relish House on Richland Street, across the street from the Richland Masonic Lodge # 39..........The Marks house and Business was burned to the ground by Gen.W.T. Sherman and his troops on February 16. 1865..
The Marks family are listed as original members of the Hebrew Benevolent Society in Columbia SC and as well in Charleston SC. (u The Marks family are listed in the Jews Of South Carolina From Earliest Times To Present Day).... Most all of the Marks are buried at the ( Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery in Columbia SC.
Humphrey Marks died at his house in Columbia SC on Sept 15, 1838 .....His wife Frances Marks died at their home in Columbia SC on March 24, 1850 .... At the time of Frances Marks death she owned a house in Charlestonu SC and a home in Columbia SC along with 21 slaves and an estate of $ 21,115.23 dollars. All was left to the Marks children.
