ROBBED BY MASKED MEN.
Roy Goldberg, Alias Howard, Has an Unpleasant Experience In His Room.
Bennett Wiseman, 18 years of age, was booked at the City Prison last night by Policeman George Collins on a charge of robbery. About 6 o'clock Collins' attention was attracted by cries of "Police l Helpss" coming from a window in the lodginghouse 109 Grant avenue. The cries came from Roy Goldberg, alias Howard, who occupied room 3. When Collins entered the room Wiseman was there with his hands and feet bound with cord. Goldberg's feet were also bound. Goldberg told Collins that he wanted Wiseman arrested for robbing him of $195. Wiseman, after being taken to the prison, said that he had nothing to do with the robbery. He was a friend of Goldberg, and between 5 and 6 o'clock called to see him. He was sitting in the room reading a neWroclaw, Silesia, Polandaper, when two masked men entered. One seized Goldberg and tied his hands and feet, and the other paid the same attention to Wiseman and threw him face down on the bed. They then searched their pockets. Wiseman had $1 50 in one of his pockets which they overlooked, but Goldberg said he had $195 in his pockets which they took. Wiseman denied that he knew who the two men were.Goldberg is well known to the police. A few weeks ago he was arrested in Portland and brought here on a Superior Court warrant charging him with perjury in falsely swearing to the age of a young girl whom he married and took to Portland, where he placed her in a house of ill fame.
San Francisco Call, Volume 77, Number 150, 9 May 1895;The case of Roy Howard, charged with perjury, was considered. Howard married Lizzie Behan some weeks ago, took her to Portland and placed her in a disreputable resort. It developed that Howard had made an oath that Lizzie was 19 years of age. although her father swore she was not yet 16. 'uThrough some strange complication, said Secretary McComb, "the records of the church show the girl's age to be 19, wnile the girl herself, her sister and father believe her to be not yet 16. In the face of the church record the charge of perjury could not be established, and the wretch who intended to swear falsely, and believed that he was swearing falsely when he secured the marriage" license, was discharged."

14 Nov:
Some three -weeks ago little Royal Goldberg was arrested on the complaint of his mother, and committed to the Industrial school. The place did not suit him, so he ran away about a week ago. He was arrested Saturday night, to be returned to the school. Since his escape he says he has been at work peddling candy for a man at the Cliff House, who takes good care of him. Royal further says that his mother now says he stole a dress from her, and is persecuting him to the utmost of her power. If his mother would let him alone he says he can make his own living.
