Oorzaak: suicide
Oakland Tribune Thursday Evening 31 May 1923;
BOY SCOUT FOUND SHOT AT HOME; Mystery Surrounds Death of Richard Apple, 15 Year-
Old San Francisco Boy; Revolver Found Near Body SAN FRANCISCO, May 31.In
an effort to determine whether accident or suicide was responsible,
police detectives are today investigating the death of Richard
Apple, 15-year-old high school student and son of Dr. Benjamin Apple, who was found dead in his
room at his home, 648 Waller street, last night. On the floor beside the body was
a revolver. A bullet had entered the temple, just over his left eye.
Young Apple was clad in his Boy Scout uniform, which he had worn
in the Memorial Day parade earlier in the day. Investigators are of the opinion
that the shooting was accidental, and declare that this theory is
supported by the fact that there were powder burns on the hands.
The boy's parents said there was nothing in his life to prompt
suicide. The lad's parents were visiting friends in Mill Valley and he was
at home with his grandmother, Mrs. Katherine Roeder. A few
minutes before Richard Retired he had been studying his lessons, according
to his grandmother. After he went to his room the woman
heard a shot, and found him lying on the floor. Following her first impulse she
telephoned his parents, informing them of the tragedy. Police were
not notified until the father returned home an hour and a half later.
