Kind(eren):
Tobias Gassman (b. 1852) (my great-grandfather) told my uncle EmanuelGassman that his own father was a minor bigwig (elsewhere "minor official") during the Prussian revolution. His side lost and there was a bulletin on him. He escaped to Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany one July night, coatless and hatless. He was in the ghetto when he was stopped by the police for being out after curfew. He explained that it was so hot he had come out for a breath of air. Asked for his identification papers and his name (which was Klein), he thought fast and said his name was Gassmann (a person of the street or area) and that he lived across the street and his papers were in his coat.
He was admonished by the officer to return to his apartment because it was not safe on the street as they were looking for a dangerous criminal by the name of Klein. He went into the apartment house and went to sleep on the roof. The next morning the Jews smuggled him into the basement of the synagogue where they forged papers for him under the name of Gassmann.
He moved to Koenigsburg and settled near there. He married and had 12 sons. As each son approached draft age, he shipped him out of the country to Italy, Poland, Belgium, Holland, the U. S.
