This information comes from "An Alaskan Memoir," written by Sol Salomon Shirpser, adopted son of David Shirpser, in December 1931 for Adolph and Elsie Shirpser. Adolph and Elsie were children of his first cousin Max Shirpser, son of David's brother Adolph. It was published in Western States Jewish Historical Quarterly, Volume X, Number 1 in October, 1977. The original manuscript is at the Western Jewish History Center in Berkeley, California, USA.
The Shirpser family were born in Torun, Bydgoszcz, Pomerania, Poland, Prussia, and consisted of six brothers and two sisters, namely: Isadore, Adolph, David, Herman, Leopold, Louis, Rosalia and Cecelia. David was the first to come to California, USA. He settled in Placerville, El Dorado County, better known at that time by the name of Hangtown. In this town my father opened a clothing store.
He was followed shortly afterwards by his brother Isadore, who settled in San Francisco where he opened a for store. Then Herman and Leopold came to San Francisco, followed soon afterwards by Adolph, his wife and five children. Adolph's son Max opened a watchmaker's store and helped support the family. Then Rosalia came to San Francisco. Cecelia, the youngest, remained in Torun, Bydgoszcz, Pomerania, Poland, and died there while still a young woman. Louis and his wife came last and settled in New York.
David Shirpser married my mother, a widow with two children, myself and my brother Emanuel. My mother came to Placerville and brought me with her. She left my brother Emanuel in Warsaw, Poland, with my grandparents, until such a time that she could send for him. By her marriage to David Shirpser we two boys were permitted to take the name of Shirpser. A better father never existed than our stepfather proved to be. My mother bore him one child, a girl, Cecelia, named after his sister. She grew to be a fine young woman, but she died quite young of quick consumption, contracted from a cold.
Isadore, who settled in San Francisco, had three children. Both Herman and Leopold were bachelors, never having married. Rosalia married a man named Kaufman, and bore him one son, named Sol. She had a very unhappy life with Kaufman, and she either divorced him or he died. Sometime later she married Emile Rosendorn, a piano Teacher. She bore Rosendorn two sons. Louis Shirpser died in New Yoirk, after which his wife and three children came to San Francisco. His son Max is in the optical business on Market Street in San Francisco.
