Letters from Attorney in Maumee City, Wood, Ohio to Mrs Nancy Deck, Galena, IL dated 3 May 1847: Nancy is claiming lotts 19 & 20 in Maumee, but told her deed was not recorded. In 1827 said lots were sold for taxes to John E. Hunt who sold on to Farnsworth. He asks how many heirs did her father or Levy Omans leave. There is no will for Levy Omans or his heirs but one John Omans in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Nancy has said her brother John lives in Antwerp, Pauling County, Ohio. Did not give names of her sisters (and no mention of brother at all) except one--Mary whose married name Nancy did not know.

The Rogue River Indian War began in Oct 1855 when a mob from Jacksonville, Oregon killed 28 Indian people camped near the Table Rock Reservation. This and other attacks caused heavily armed groups of Indians to come together in a large force led by Tecumtum and others. As the war intensified, more and more regular forces concentrated in the Rouge River area, and the initial volunteers were released to return home, only to be replace by other volunteer units. Throughout the winter, battles raged and stretched from Gold Beach on the coast inland to Jacksonville. Further reinforcements of regulars became impossible, and the burden of fighting fell almost entirely upon the volunteers. By May 1856, more than 700 men comprised the volunteer force which continuously pressed the Indians throughout the harsh winter. With little food and goods left, the Indians surrendered in June 1856 after nearly nine months of continuous battle.
February 23, 1856, Captain Ben Wright, Captain John Poland, H. Braun, E. W. Howe, Mrr Wagoner, Barney Castle, George McCluskey, Mrr Lara, W. R. Tullus, James Seroc and two sons, Mrr Smith, Mrr Warner, John Grisell and three children, S. Heidrick, Patrick McCullough, and four others, whose names are unknown, were killed by Indians in charge of agent Captain Ben Wright, near the mouth of Rogue river.
The agent in charge of the Indians below Coos Bay was Ben Wright, a man admired and feared by them. Wright fell in with a party of armed men from Coos Bay going toward the Indian camp with the determination to destroy it. To these men he represented that the Coquilles were friendly. At the mouth of Rogue River defenses had been built, and in their wrath the white men were threatening to kill or disarm all the Indians in the vicinity. The conduct of the Indians under Wright had been so good since the punishment of the Coquilles in the early part of the winter that no apprehensions were felt. On the night of the 22d of February a dancing-party was given at Whaleshead in honor of the day, and part of the volunteer company was in attendance, leaving but a few men to guard the camp. Early on the morning of the 23d, before the dancers had returned, the guard was attacked by a large body of Indians, who fell upon them with such suddenness and fury that but two out of fifteen escaped.

Suffering from cold, hunger, and disease on the Table Rock Reservation, a group of Takelma returned to their old village at the mouth of Little Butte Creek in October 1855. After a volunteer militia attacked them, killing 23 men, women, and children, they fled downriver, attacking whites from Gold Hill to Galice Creek.[20] Confronted by volunteers and regular army troops, the Indians at first repulsed them; however, after nearly 200 volunteers launched an all-day assault on the remaining natives, the war ended at Big Bend (at RM 35 or RK 56) on the lower river.[20] By then, fighting had also ended near the coast, where, before retreating upstream, a separate group of natives had killed about 30 whites and burned their cabins near what later became Gold Beach.[21] By May 1856, more than 700 men comprised the volunteer force which continuously pressed the Indians throughout the harsh winter. Nancy R. Coburn and a Isaac Warnick made a claim to the govt for $9,386.39 for damage to their Hotel Building and contents on 23 Feb 1856 for damage done by the Rogue River Indians. The claim was made in and for the county of Coose and Territory of Oregon, USARat the mouth of Rogue River. At the mouth of the river at Gold Beach was a "miners' fort", which is now in Curry County, Oregon, USA There were two major wars with the Rogue River Indians, 1853 and 1856. There was a big Indian raid on the coast in February 1856. Lots of death and destruction (Greg Chaimov).

Maumee City [Ohio] May 3d 1847, Mrs Nancy Deck, Galena [Galena, Jo Davess, Illinois; 140 miles WSW Milwaukee; 140 WNW Chicago]. Madam Your letter of the `6th ultimo enclosing J Venquiny in regard to lots `9 & 20 ss saw lots to Saunders P. Day, March 25 1822 which deed was recoded May 20 1822 in Book A P. 22 & 23 in Wood County Ohio in there is no deed from Day to any person on record. The deed you hold has not probably been recoded or if it has the officer neglected to index it. On the 31st Dec. 1827 said lots were sold for the taxes of 1826, 1827 and bid off by John E. Hunt and deeded to himR. Subsequently said Hunt quit claimer said lots of one Farnsworth since deceased in Farnsworths heirs have build a large framed house on them and now hold and occupy the same. There is no will on record from Levy Omans nor any heirs in this region unless it be one (John I think) Omans residing at Fort Wayne Indiana. Tax titles generally are worthless to those claiming under themR. It would probably cost you from $20 to $25 to carry though a law suit - perhaps none in the lots are worth from $100 to $150 each, perhaps more but not less. The improvements are worth about $1000 or less not over. If you succeed you will probably have to pay for the improvements or let Farnsworth have the lots at the apprised value say $200 or $300. R How many heirs did your father or Levy Omans leave and where are they. What are their years birth days girls where married whether their husbands are living if not where did the husbands decease.
