ASSOCIATIONS: Ann Savill, wife of Samuel Bass, was sister o f William Savill, who had arrived in New England by 1641, a nd settled at Braintree [ NEHGR 107:218-20].
COMMENTS: Waldo Chamberlain Sprague commissioned research i n the parish registers of Saffron Walden, Essex [ NEHGR 107 :218-20], but in this research the 1632 baptism of the daug hter Hannah (or Ann) was missed. This conflicts with eviden ce about the daughter Mary, whose gravestone claims she die d in 1704 in her seventy-third year [ NEHGR 107:219], whic h would calculate to about 1632, and would make her about f ifteen years old at marriage. Given our knowledge of the ot her children, the options are to place Mary's birth about 1 634, which would make her impossibly young at marriage, o r about 1628, which would make her about nineteen years ol d at marriage, but which would conflict withthe graveston e evidence. We have chosen the latter course.
On 28 May 1659 in answer "to the petition of Samuel Basse , the town of Braintrje [sic] having petitioned for a new p lantation, it is ordered, that the petitioner, with his son s, may have liberty to join with those of his neighbors whi ch will carry on such a work, with allowance of one hundre d & fifty acres, within the bounds of the said plantation , more than his just proportion with the rest of his neighb ors" [ MBCR 4:1:377].
Mary, daughter of Samuel Bass, born at Braintree 26 April 1 643 [ NEHGR 3:126], has been ascribed to Samuel Junior (Cha rissa Taylor Bass and Emma Lee Walton, Descendants of Deaco n Samuel & Ann Bass [Freeport IL 1940], p. 5), but this mus t be the youngest child of Samuel Senior, and the entry a n error for Sarah. Samuel Junior would be only sixteen at t he time of the birth of this child, and the record does no t distinguish between Senior and Junior, indicating that Ju nior was not yet of age. Thus, the only child of Samuel Jun ior is his son Samuel, and from the probate proceedings w e learn that this child was born shortly before the father' s death.

ESTATE: On 15 January 1666/7 the heirs of William Tyng sol d to Deacon Samuel Bass, Edmund Quinsey, Gregory Belcher, W illiam Savell and Joseph Crosby, all of Braintree, for £190 0 "all that farm in Braintree aforesaid, which did belong u nto the said Capt: William Tyng, in the time of his life ca lled or known by the name of Salter's Farm, in which the sa id Gregory Belcher doth now inhabit and dwell, with all th e houses, barns, stables, outhouses, yards, gardens, orchar ds, with all the upland, arable land, woodland, meadows, pl ains and swamp" [ SLR 5:229-31, 342-43]. On 28 October 167 0 "Deacon Samuel Bass of Brantery" sold to John Ruggles o f the same town for £16 two acres of salt marsh in Braintre e "which formerly was part of a farm called or known by th e name of Salter's Farm" [ SLR 11:311-12]. On 18 February 1 681/2 the purchasers of this land (or their heirs) confirme d a division of the farm, "which several parts were laid ou t in several divisions of land & meadow & swamp according t o each man's proportion," in which Samuel Bass received one -quarter of the farm [ SLR 12:265-66]. On the same day Samu el Bass Sr., Joseph Crosby and John Savell, executor to th e will of William Savell, deceased, all of Braintree, excha nged land with Lt. Edmond Quinsey of Braintree, giving hi m "thirty & two acres of land and meadow more or less lyin g and being in Braintery aforesaid and being a part of th e farm called Salter's farm ..." [ SLR 12:171].
On 26 April 1668 Joshua Fisher laid out forty acres for Sam uel Bass, and on 27 May 1668 the General Court confirmed th e grant [ MBCR 4:2:386-87].
On 29 August 1672 Samuel Bass of Braintree, yeoman, sold t o John Hull of Boston, goldsmith, for £50 two parcels at Bo gastow near Medfield, one parcel being half of a two hundre d acre lot, and the other being forty acres; Ann Bass wif e of Samuel consented [ SLR 5:15-16]. On 20 June 1674 Thoma s Bass of Braintree, yeoman, sold to John Hull for £30 "al l that parcel of land at Bogastow being the one half of tw o hundred acres formerly sold by Daniel Morse unto Samuel B ass and the other half lately sold by said Samuel Bass unt o the said John Hull"; Sarah Bass wife of Thomas consente d [ SLR 5:16-18].

The inventory of Samuel Bass, taken 3 January 1694/5, total led £942 1s. 6d., of which £891 was real estate: house an d orchard behind it, fresh meadow at the end of it with kit chen and well, £96; malthouse and utensils for malt and orc hard before the malthouse, his part of kitchen and well, £7 0; barn and two acres of land part of which it standeth o n and two acres at the head of it and one acre bought of Jo hn Dassett and seven acres in the Slough Field, £100; sixt y acres of upland in Captain's Plain, £90; thirty acres o f salt marsh, £300; six acres of land lying in the Stony Fi eld, £18; twenty acres of land at the farm at the fourscor e acres, £80; twentyone acres of land at the Great Island a t the farm, £60; eighteen acres of land at the ox pasture i n the farm, £45; eleven acres of land in three parcels at t he farm, £22; and eight acres of swamp, £10 [ SPR Case #220 0, 13:541].

Bass notes that nothing is known of their English ancestors . They came to Roxbury in 1632 and moved to Braintree by 16 40. He immediately became very active in town affairs. Th e town clerk's obituary gives some idea of his involvement : "Deacon Samuel Bass, aged 94, departed this life upon th e 30th day of December 1694, who had been a Deacon of the C hurch of Braintree for the space of 50 years, and was the f ather and grandfather and great grandfather of a hundred an d sixty and two children before he died, the youngest wer e of was Benjimin Bass the son of Joseph Bass and Mary hi s wife, born seven days before his death. He represented th e town in no less that twelve General Courts, served on imp ortant Committees, was Selectman innumerable times and acti ve in the Church and all the time continued his farming."

There is more information about his children that has not b een entered. They married into many of the colonial familie s that we seem to come across.

"Samuel with his wife Anne and one or two young children, w ere among the first settlers of the Mass. Bay Colony, comin g to it about 1630. He settled first in Roxbury, near Hoy B ridge. He and his wife were enrolled among the earliest mem bers of the first church in that town, which was gathered a s early as 1632. He was admitted freeman May 14, 1634, an d lived in Roxbury until about 1640, when he was chosen an d ordained the first deacon of the church there. In 1641, a nd subsequent years, he represented the town in the Genera l Court, in all, twelve years. "
