>John Alden, was born c.1598/99, in England (possibly Harwich,
Essex,England). He died 12 September 1687, at Duxbury, Massachusets. Hemarried
Priscilla MULLENS, c.1623 at Plymouth. She was the daughter ofWilliam and
Alice______MULLINS.

In 1634, John ALDEN was on the Kennebec River
assisting in the force flil removal of John HOCKING who was illegally fishing
and trading on land that had been granted to the Pilgrims. Hockings refused to
leave, and when the party arrived at his ship by canoe to board and remove him,
he shot and killed Moses TALBOT. In return, HOCKING was shot and killed. The
Massachusetts Bay Colony took matters into its own hands, and arrested John
ALDEN (even though he was not the one who fired the shot). Myles STANDISH was
sent by Governor BRADFORD to obtain ALDEN's release, which he successfully
did.

In his later years, John ALDEN was on many juries, including even a
witch trial--though in Plymouth's case, the jury found the accuser guilty of
libel and the alleged witch was allowed to go free. Plymouth Colony only had two
witch trials during its history, and in both cases the accuser was found guilty
and punished.

John and Priscilla ALDEN probably have the largest number
of descendants of any Mayflower passenger, but with stiff competition from
Richard WARREN and John HOWLAND.

ALDEN, John, Pilgrim, was born in England in
1599. He wa s a cooper and when the Mayflower put in to Southampton, in a leaky
condition, he was hired to make repairs and persuaded to join the Pilgrims, with
the privilege of returning to England with the vessel. Before making a landing
at Plymouth he signed the contract in the cabin of the Mayflower off Cape Cod.
He was the youngest of the signers and the last survivor. He became an active
member of the colony , was anassistant in 1633, and served from 1650 to 1686.
From 1641 to 1642, and from 1645 to 1649 he was deputy from Duxbury. He was a
soldier in Captain Miles Standish's company in 1643; a member of the council of
war in 1653 to 1660, and 1675 to 1676, and treasurer of the colony from 1656 to
1659. The romantic incident of his life in connection with Priscilla Mullins,
whom he married in 1623, has been told by Longfellow in "Miles Standish's
Courtship." His blundering attempts to woo the Pilgrim girl for his friend, the
maid's refusal of the doughty captain, and her arch, "Why don't you speak for
yourself John?" are well known. Many and very worthy descendants have sprung
from this marriage. Mr. Alden was highly respected by the colonists for his
integrity and his practical good sense. For several years he served as
magistrate. He died in Duxbury, Mass., Sept. 12,1687.

One hundred and
two passengers sailed from England on the Mayflower. One died at sea (William
Butten), four died at Provincetown Harbor (DorothyBradford, James Chilton,
Jasper More, and Edward Thompson), one was born at sea (Oceanus Hopkins), and
one was born at Provincetown Harbor (Peregrine White), and thus there arrived at
Plymouth ninety-nine of those we say "stayed." These included John Alden, a
cooper who signed on the Mayflower at Southampton, and who accepted an offer to
stay as part of the company, and four seamen. Two o f the seamen (William Trevor
and_____ Ely) were hired to stay for one year, and two others (John Allerton and
Thomas English)were hired to be part of the company, but the lattert wo died
before the Mayflower sailed again. The entire crew stayed throughout the severe
winter of 1620\21, and about half died. The surviving crewmembers returned to
England when the Mayflower set sail on 5 April1621. Of the settlers, only
fifty-two, including Trevor and Ely, were still alive when the Fortune, the next
ship, arrived in November
1621.

JOHN
ALDEN came from England in the Mayflower in 1620. He did notbelong to the Leyden
group. As Governor Bradford wrote, he "was hired as a cooper at South-Hampton,
wher the ship victuled; and being a hopfull yong man, was much desired , but
left to his owne liking to goor stay when he came he re; but he stayed and
maryed here."

His wife was Priscilla Mullens, daughter of William and
Alice Mullens, and they married about 1622. Mr. Bradford wrote of them in1650:
"both living, and hath 11 children. And their eldest daughter is maried, and
hath 5 children." John died at his home in Duxbury September 22, 1687 "in a good
old age," the last male survivor of those who came in the Mayflower and signed
the compact in her cabinin 1620. He left no will and his third son, Jonathan, as
administrator, made a final settlement with the family June 13, 1688, which
wassigned by the heirs but does not account for eleven children. Priscilla had
died before her husband
