NORSE PREDECESSORS of the EARLS of ORKNEY - subject to King of Norway until after 1379dreys and Sudreys) in the spring of 1099 by his father Magnus III Barelegs, King of Norway (1093-1103), who had kept Orkney in his own hand after the deposition of Jarls Paul I and Erlend II and now added it to the Sudreys, which he had conquered in the summer of 1099. Sigurd, b. circa 1089, was put in charge of his kinsman Hakon, son of Jarl Paul Thorfinsson, in 1099. King Sigurd m., in 1099, 1101, or 1102, Biadmunai or Blathmin, then aged 5, daughter of Muirchtach MacToiredlbach, High King of Ireland (1086-1119), great-grandson of King Brian. After the death of his father in Ireland (24 May 1103), Sigurd returned to Norway, where he became co-King with his half-brothers, Eystein I, then aged 14 or 15, and Olaf IV, then aged four. He left behind him his wife Blathmin (a), and apparently Hakon Paulsson in Orkney as his Lieutenants, and "one winter or two" later gave the Orkneys to Hakon with the title of Jarl (? Spring 1105). Harald's mother was Gyda, daughter of Harald II Godwinsson, King of England.is 1st wife a little older (5 years). I don't know what CP's source is for the estimate of her birth date (perhaps a saga). I speculate that she might have been 5 at the time of the marriage arrangement, which may have been some time before the marriage. Blathmin was probably older than 9 when she was residing with Sigurd in Orkney in 1103. Children may have been married at an early age in an arranged marriage, but they didn't start living together until they were 13 or 14 (young adolescents of child-bearing age).103 to 1130.ng his brother Eystein to rule Norway by himself.er afield, he attacked the Balearic Islands and the Barbary Coast of North Africa.. The Normans in Italy still considered themselves kinsmen of the Norwegians, and Roger of Sicily was married to Adela, the widow of St. Knut of Denmark. [NOTE: This was Roger Borsa, Duke of Apulia in my files] At Jerusalem, Sigurd was welcomed by King Baldwin. (This King Baldwin, it may be remembered, was of Frankish ancestry. He left Europe on the First Crusade, and was with the Crusaders when they conquered Jerusalem in 1099. The following year, when his brother Godfrey of Buillon died, Baldwin succeeded him as ruler of Jerusalem, and reigned there until his own death in 1118.)as grateful for Sigurd's help in extending his domain and gave him a splinter that supposedly came from Christ's original cross. Sigurd, on his part, promised to preserve the splinter at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, to collect tithes for the church, and to seek the establishment of Nidaros as an archbishopric.e into the city with a proud bearing, and not to show any astonishment at the marvels they might behold.
