NORSE PREDECESSORS of the EARLS of ORKNEY - subject to King of Norway until after 1379dreys and Sudreys) in the spring of 1099 by his father Magnus III Barelegs, King of Norway (1093-1103), who had kept Orkney in his own hand after the deposition of Jarls Paul I and Erlend II and now added it to the Sudreys, which he had conquered in the summer of 1099. Sigurd, b. circa 1089, was put in charge of his kinsman Hakon, son of Jarl Paul Thorfinsson, in 1099. After the death of his father in Ireland (24 May 1103), Sigurd returned to Norway, where he became co-King with his half-brothers, Eystein I, then aged 14 or 15, and Olaf IV, then aged four. He left behind him his wife Blathmin (a), and apparently Hakon Paulsson in Orkney as his Lieutenants, and "one winter or two" later gave the Orkneys to Hakon with the title of Jarl (? Spring 1105).
