St Andrew's Cathedral Register, Singapoe: B. Fitzgerald-Moore notes.
Married his first cousin, Esther Carnie.
"APB retired to England in 1910 with, apparently, considerable wealth and income (largely arising from rubber plantations in Sumatra), but lost it all (o
r most of it) in WWI, when the income dried and he had to sell large quantities of then relatively worthless shares to provide an income. They then moved, probably at or about the end of WWI, from the
fabulous Elizabethan Country House that he had bought on moving to England, into what Dad (Alfred Edgar Bernard 1901 - 1979) referred to as their seaside cottage in Walton-on-Naze, called Alma Lodge.
APB died very soon afterwards, c. 1922. Auntie Esther (1886 - 1991) continued to live there for the rest of her life, so had been in it for over 70 years at her death. I lived in Alma Lodge as a smal
l boy, with my parents, while we were waiting to go to Dad's next posting in Aden. APB's widow and Auntie were both there. As cottages go I thought it pretty good - it had 5 bedrooms, 3 living rooms,
a big garden and central heating, which I would guess was very unusual in WWI. Auntie was a great letter writer and never threw anything away, so in '91 I found the house absolutely full of postcards,
letters and papers. for example, APB's writing desk did not appear to have been disturbed sinde his death in '22." (Derek Bernard 24.12.2004)
