Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire Burial: Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire ============================================================================= "Edward II (25 April 1284 – 21 September 1327), also called Edward of Caernarfon,[1] was King of England from 1307 until he was deposed by his wife Isabella in January 1327. He was the sixth Plantagenet king, in a line that began with the reign of Henry II. Between the strong reigns of his father Edward I and son Edward III, the reign of Edward II was considered by some to be disastrous for England, marked by alleged incompetence, political squabbling and military defeats. While Edward fathered at least five children by two women, he was rumoured to have been bisexual. His inability to deny even the most grandiose favours to his unpopular male favourites (first a Gascon knight named Piers Gaveston, later a young English lord named Hugh Despenser) led to constant political unrest and his eventual deposition. Edward I had pacified Gwynedd and some other parts of Wales and the Scottish lowlands, but never exerted a comprehensive conquest. However, the army of Edward II was devastatingly defeated at Bannockburn, freeing Scotland from English control and allowing Scottish forces to raid unchecked throughout the north of England. In addition to these disasters, Edward II is remembered for his probable death in Berkeley Castle, allegedly by murder, and for being the first monarch to establish colleges at Oxford and Cambridge: Oriel College at Oxford and King's Hall, a predecessor of Trinity College, at Cambridge." ================================================================================= Wikipedia links: [http://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II_van_Engeland Afrikaans], [http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A5%D8%AF%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AF_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AB%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A_%D9%85%D9%84%D9%83_%D8%A5%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A7 العربية], [http://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%95%D0%B4%D1%83%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4_II Български], [http://bs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II,_kralj_Engleske Bosanski], [http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II._ Česky], [http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_2._af_England Dansk], [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II._%28England%29 Deutsch], [http://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%95%CE%B4%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%AC%CF%81%CE%B4%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%92%27_%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%91%CE%B3%CE%B3%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B1%CF%82 Ελληνικά], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_II_of_England English], [http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_II_de_Inglaterra Español], [http://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AF_%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%85_%D8%A7%D9%86%DA%AF%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%86 فارسی], [http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_II Suomi], [http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89douard_II_d%27Angleterre Français], [http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%90%D7%93%D7%95%D7%90%D7%A8%D7%93_%D7%94%D7%A9%D7%A0%D7%99,_%D7%9E%D7%9C%D7%9A_%D7%90%D7%A0%D7%92%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%94 עברית], [http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_II._ Hrvatski] [http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/II._Edu%C3%A1rd_angol_kir%C3%A1ly Magyar], [http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_II_dari_Inggris Bahasa Indonesia], [http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A1tvar%C3%B0ur_2._ Íslenska], [http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edoardo_II_d%27Inghilterra Italiano], [http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%A8%E3%83%89%E3%83%AF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%892%E4%B8%96_%28%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%E7%8E%8B%29 日本語], [http://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%EC%97%90%EB%93%9C%EC%9B%8C%EB%93%9C_2%EC%84%B8 한국어], [http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardas_II Lietuvių], [http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduards_II_Plantagenets Latviešu], [http://mk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%95%D0%B4%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4_II Македонски], [http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II_van_Engeland Nederlands], [http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_II_av_England ‪Norsk (bokmål)‬], [http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_II Polski], [http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_II_de_Inglaterra Português], [http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_al_II-lea_al_Angliei Română], [http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%AD%D0%B4%D1%83%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4_II Русский], [http://sh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_II._ Srpskohrvatski / Српскохрватски], [http://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_II._%28Anglicko%29 Slovenčina], [http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%95%D0%B4%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4_II_%D0%9F%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%B3%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B5%D1%82 Српски / Srpski], [http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_II_av_England Svenska], [http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%A1%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B9%87%E0%B8%88%E0%B8%9E%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B0%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%88%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%B2%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%AD%E0%B9%87%E0%B8%94%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%A3%E0%B9%8C%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%88_2_%E0%B9%81%E0%B8%AB%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A4%E0%B8%A9 ไทย], [http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/II._Edward Türkçe], [http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%95%D0%B4%D1%83%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4_II Українська], [http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%88%B1%E5%BE%B7%E5%8D%8E%E4%BA%8C%E4%B8%96_%28%E8%8B%B1%E6%A0%BC%E5%85%B0%29 中文] ============================================================================= other links: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/edward_ii_king.shtml http://www.britroyals.com/kings.asp?id=edward2 http://www.englishmonarchs.co.uk/plantagenet_6.htm http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=1956 http://www.geneall.net/U/per_page.php?id=519 http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I439&tree=EuropeRoyalNobleHous http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I98&tree=Nixon http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I185595&tree=Welsh http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/edward2.htm http://www.mathematical.com/englandedward1284.htm http://www.nndb.com/people/710/000093431/ http://www.royalist.info/execute/biog?person=92 http://thepeerage.com/p10094.htm ================================================================================= Citations / Sources: [S11] Alison Weir, Britain's Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy (London, U.K.: The Bodley Head, 1999), pages 89-91.
