She was born Grace Elizabeth Carlina Bruns on March 16, 1921 on a farm near Willow Lake, the daughter of Michael and Dora (Waldow) Bruns. She attended country schools in Rosedale and Hague Townships. After graduating from the 8th grade, she worked helping other families in the area.
It was in one of those homes she was working in that she met Ellsworth Bratland and after two years of courting, and dancing to piano and accordion music they were married. She and Ellsworth were married at the home of her parents on May 23, 1941. Grace played the accordion and piano by ear. They farmed at various places until 1945 when they bought their own place east and south of Willow Lake. On Wednesday and Saturdays it was always fun to go into town and sell their cream and eggs to Valentines Produce.
Grace learned to knit and crochet when she was young, later learning to sew. When she and Ellsworth got into square dancing, she made all of her own dresses and even his ties to match. They had lots of fun during the years dancing with the Lake City Twirlers. She also enjoyed countless hours of quilting, being part of the ladies quilting group at her Church. Grace did bead work as well. At one time, Grace was a member of the Go and Sew Neighbor Club.
In 1976 they moved into town with Ellsworth still helping on the farm occasionally and Grace keeping busy with quilting. The couple bought a motorhome and they enjoyed traveling to many places around the United States. Ellsworth died in 2000. Grace continued living in the family home until a little over three years ago when she became a resident of the Parkview Community in Bryant.
In her Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) at Willow Lake, she was active in the Ladies Aid, a Sunday School Teacher, and was a confirmed and life-long member.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a son, Curtis, a granddaughter, Charlett, a sister, Margaret McPeek and a brother, Carl Bruns.
Grateful for having shared in her life were "her boys", Delwin "Del" (Barb) Bratland of Willow Lake, Roucal "Cal" (Lori) Bratland of Sturgis, Clifton "Cliff" (Cheryl) Bratland of Willow Lake, and Neal Bratland of Eagan, MN. 12 grandchildren, Scott, Curtis, Jr., Curwin, Cory, Chad, Tim, Trav, and Nick Bratland, Tracy Bratland-Bruns, Jackie Fleming, Connie Hovde, and Chanda Nelson; 25 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law, Karen Bratland of Vermont.
