SKETCH Rufus Trumbull was born in Lucas County, Ohio, where his Grandfather had settled in 1833. Aged 6, he was listed in his father's household there in the 1850 federal census and, aged 15, again in 1860. Rufus served in the Civil War as aprivate in Company I, 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry for three and a half years.
He was in all the battles in which his regiment was engaged. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, September 19, 1863, losing six months service, was orderly sergeant for Major General Beard. He was honorably discharged July 11,1865.C Remarks: mustered out with company July 11, 1865, by order of War Dept. Roster of Ohio soldiers vol II 20th infantry reg. Cincinnati, Wilstock, Boldwin & Co. 1864 Rufus H. Trumbull,(private) age 18 Feb. 11, 1864 Period of service 3years. B
Rufus H. Trumbull returned to the family farm after the War. He was listed in the household of his parents in the 1870 federal census (Rufus Trumbull, 25, N.Y., at home).
On 29 May 1875 Rufus Married Alice Y Files born Jan. 1854 in Springfield Twp, Oh, died 24 Feb 1907 buried at Springfield cem. She was the Daughter of Sylvanus B. Files b. 1792 in Rhode Island d. 1875 buried at Springfield cem, and MarthaJewett b. 1808 in New York, d. 1891 in Ohio, buried at Springfield cem. m. 1830 in Greene County Oh, They had 9 children Eliza, Amelia, Amos, Lucy, Sylvina, Martha, John Quincy, Emily and Alice. Alice's father may have been a judge inWauseon. In the 1880 federal census, R.H. Trumbull (34, Ohio) was at Springfield Township with wife A.Y. (21, Ohio) and son D.G. (2, Ohio).
All of Rufus and Alice's children were born on a farm in Holland OH. The house, Cranberry Farm is still on airport highway (House is no longer standing in 2001). Rufus wanted to be a lawyer, and he also studied for the ministry.
Rufus Trumbull served as Springfield Township trustee in 1880 and justice of the peace from 1882 through 1885. In his later years he may have moved into Toledo to live with his children. In the 1910 federal census Rufus H. Trumbull (64,Ohio) was enumerated in the household of Earl A. McCord, his son-in-law. There are many stories about Rufus and the Cranberry Farm: Don Trumbull (his grandson) remembers Rufus when Don was a child. Don tells of him always giving outpepermints to the children, also remembers Rufus being buried at the Springfield cem. Don tells a story of a time when Rufus was going to lose the farm so he drained the Cranberry marsh in the winter to kill the bushes, (the crainberrieswere flooded in the winter to keep them from freezing) they got the farm but not the berries. Don recalls that Rufus was a drummer boy, 15 years old, during the Civil War, and got shot in the head. There is a story of two brothersinheriting some money the one brother went to California to get it, but spent the money before he got home so the other brother got mad and drained or burned the cranberry march.
NOTE As for the cranberry farm, from Waggoner, Toledo and Lucas County, Ohio, 876, 878: [Rufus's father] James came with his father and large family to Spring?eld Township, Lucas Co., Ohio, about 1833. According to the county history,James assisted his father in working the farm: Part of this is the somewhat noted Cranberry Farm. In October, 1870, James Trumbull, son of David, picked from three acres on this farm 400 bushels of cranberries, which were worth $3.80 perbushel in market, or $500 per acre for the crop. They were picked upon shares (one-?fth, 250 pickers being on the ground at one time). His son, Rufus H. Trumbull, has raised as many as 1,600 bushels of these berries in one season, and in1887 had 12 acres in this crop. Letter written by Rufus in 1916 To Lee and Donzo, From Grand Pa. Yes my little grand-sons, your beautiful card reminds me, Your grand-father, in years, is three score and eleven, And his many friends hemeets in his every day toil, Flatter him, by saying, he is; spry as a school boy of seven. These lines you can cherish, lay away and safely keep. And have them many years, after your grand-father last long sleep.Remembering, yourgrand-father wrote them on the day he was seventy-one. On the third day of May nineteen hundred and sixteen, as he sat silent and alone. Your Grand Pa as ever, Rufus H.
