WILLIAM WARNER
ORIGIN: Boxted, Essex.
MIGRATION: 1635 (based on appearance in Ipswich land records in 1635 [ITR]).
FIRST RESIDENCE: Ipswich.
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Ipswich church prior to 2 May 1638 implied by freemanship.
FREEMAN: 2 May 1638 (as "Willi[am] Warrener," third in a sequence of six Ipswich men [MBCR 1 :374]).
ESTATE: A 1635 Ipswich grant of land to Thomas Wells included "a parcel of meadow, lying at the West Meadows being eight acres, having on the northwest meadow granted to William Warner" [ITR].
The town of Ipswich granted to "William Warner, as in the old town book appeareth Anno 1637 as followeth: one houselot one acre ... in the Mill Street ... , also a planting lot six acres ... , also a farm ninety and seven acres ... meadow and upland ... , also a parcel of meadow, lying in the West Meadows, being fourteen acres" [ITR].
BIRTH: By about 1587 (based on estimated date of marriage). (John William Linzee set forth several baptismal records for William Warners born about the right time, but none was strongly supported as the immigrant [Parker-Ruggles 430-31].)
DEATH: After 2 May 1638.
MARRIAGE: By 1612 ______ (surname possibly Baker; see ASSOCIATIONS below).
CHILDREN:
JOHN WARNER, bp. Boxted, Essex, 9 September 1612 (deposed 20 June 1661 "aged about forty-five years" [EQC 2:318]);
m. by about 1641 Priscilla Symonds (eldest known child deposed on 26 March 1679 "aged about thirty-eight years" [Parker-Ruggles 307, citing ILR 1: 160], daughter of MARK SYMONDS { 1636, Ipswich} [Parker-Ruggles 438-44; EPR 1:285, 2:33-34].
ABIGAIL WARNER, bp. Boxted, Essex, 2 Jun 1614; m. by about 1636 THOMAS WELLS {1635, Ipswich}.
DANIEL WARNER, b. say 1616;
m. (1) by about 1640 Elizabeth Denne[?] [Hammatt 395 (see COMMENTS below)] (Elizabeth Warner, wife of Daniel, d. Ipswich 1 November 1659);
m. (2) Ipswich 1 July 1660 Faith( __ ) Brown, widow of Edward Brown [EPR 3:360-62; ParkerRuggles 437-38];
m. (3) Ipswich 1 June 1686 Ellen (Pell) (Boynton) Jewett ("Daniel Warner Sr. and widow Ellen Jeawett of Rowley"), widow of John Boynton and of MAXIMILIAN JEWETT {1639, Rowley} [Parker-Ruggles 435; Rowley Fam 26, 168-69].
ASSOCIATIONS: Richard Lumkin and Sarah Baker were married at Boxted, Essex, on 20 October 1614. After Lumkin's death, Sarah married SIMON STONE {1635, Watertown} [GM 2:6:553-58]. In her will of 25 March 1663, "Sarah Stone wife of Simon Stone of WaterTowne ... and the relict of Richard Lumkin deceased sometime of Boxstead in the County of Essex in England and last of all of Ipswich in New England" ordered that the residue of her estate "be equally divided between my kinsmen John Warner, Daniel Warner and Thomas Wells" and made these three men her executors [l\\1PR 2:128-30, Case #21723]. Given this close connection between Sarah (Baker) (Lumpkin) Stone and the children of William Warner, and the baptism of two of the children of William Warner at Boxted, most writers have proposed that William Warner married a sister of Sarah, but no further evidence has emerged which would confirm that this is the precise relation between the two
families.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1913 John William Linzee compiled an account of this immigrant, with a line of descent through his son John, including extensive documentation [Parker-Ruggles 303-10, 430-44].
In 1943 Mary Walton Ferris published a brief account of William Warner, with a line of descent through his son Daniel [Dawes-Gates 1 :649-58]. In 1948 Donald Lines Jacobus prepared an account of William W amer, with a line of descent through his son John [Brainerd Anc 293-95].
