Richard Lyman, Jr. was baptized 24 Feb, 1617/18* at High Ongar, Essex, England. He immigrated with his parents as a young man of 14 aboard the ship Lyon. The Lyon sailed 1 Dec 1630, and departed Bristol with about 20 passengers, and arrived in Salem, Massachusetts on 5 Feb 1631. The ships' passengers also included the family of Gov. Winthrop. *old calendar/new calendar.

Richard married Hepzibah Ford, the daughter of Thomas Ford of Windsor, Connecticut. Hepzibah had arrived the prior year aboard the Mary and John. After Richard's death, in Northampton, Massachusetts, 3 Jun 1662, she married John Marsh as his second wife. Richard and Hepzibah had eight children: Hepzibah, Sarah, Richard, Thomas, Eliza, John, Joanna, and Hannah. Hepzibah also had a daughter, Lydia, born to John Marsh in 1667.

In 1629 Richard Lyman, Sr., the patriarch, sold property at Norton Mandeville, in the parish of Ongar, county of Essex, and about the middle of August, 1631, embarked with his wife and children in the ship "Lion," William Pierce, master, for New England, taking their departure from the port of Bristol. After ten weeks at sea, the ship arrived at Natascot, then made its way to Boston, and the passengers landed on the 4th of November.

Richard Lyman, Sr. first became a settler in Charlestown, Massachusetts, then on the 15th of October, 1635, he took his departure with his family from Charlestown, joining a party of about 100 persons, who went through the trackless wilderness from Massachusetts more than 100 miles into Connecticut, about 14 days time. He was one of the first settlers at Hartford.

Richard Lyman, Sr. died in August 1640. All the children are named in his will, and his daughter Phillis is called the wife of William Hills. His widow, Sarah, died soon afterwards, before the presenting of the will at court, January 1642. Their Pastor recorded the children, Phillis, Richard, Sarah, and John.

Richard Lyman, Jr. was baptized 24 Feb, 1617 at High Ongar. He married Hepzibah Ford, the daughter of Thomas Ford of Windsor. She was sister of the wife of Elder John Strong of Dorchester, Windsor and Northampton, the patriarch of the Strongs. Her second husband was John Marsh of Hadley, Massachusetts as his second wife. They married in Hartford, Connecticut 1 Oct 1664. John Marsh died at the age of 70, 28 Sep 1688 in Windsor, Connecticut where he is buried in the Palisado Cemetery. John and Hepzibah Marsh had a daughter, Lydia born in 1667.

Richard was a taxpayer in Hartford as early as 1655; he resided some time in Windsor, owned land there, and occupied some of the land of his father Ford in East Windsor, Hartford, which he sold in 1660. He appears to have been a man of decided character and influence. Immediately on his removal to Northampton he was appointed one of the first selectmen chosen in that place, and through his short life was engaged in public business. He died June 3, 1662.

Richard and Hepzibah had eight children, Hepzibah, Sarah, Richard, Thomas, Eliza, John, Joanna, and Hannah.
