"... Thomas "The Planter" Gardner Reason:
I'm not seeing any documentation for "Captain" other than a transcription of handwritten notes by someone's aunt. At any rate, I think he's more commonly known as the first governor, and most commonly as "The Planter"; so that description is best for identification purposes (and to avoid mistaken merges).

Birth before 30 October 1591 Dorset, England
Reason:
Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, p. 733. "Birth: About 1592 (deposed aged about sixty-nine 26 November 1661[EQC 2:320])"
NB Anderson's work is now a bit dated, as recently, the baptism records for the children Thomas Gardner & Margaret Fryer (save Joseph) were discovered in Sherborne parish records. There was also a baptism record for a Thomas Gardner, the 30th of Oct., 1591, as well as Margaret Fryer, the 5th of June, 1598:
Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812.

Christening 30 October 1591 Sherborne, Dorset, England Reason: His baptism record does NOT name parents. The year is 1591, not 1592 Dorset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812.
