The 1657 death record is for a Thomas Birch - A Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston, containing Dorchester Births, Marriages, and Deaths to the End of 1825

Thomas Birchard died between May 9, 1683, when he sold land, and Sept. 16, 1684, when the court records that a codicil to his will was presented. On 19 Sep 1635, Thomas Birchard, a laboring man age 40,his wife Mary age 38 and his children Elizabeth 13, Marie 12, Sara 9,Susan 8, John 7 and Ann 18 months took passage on the True Love sailing from London for New England. He came to the Massachusetts Colony where he was made a freeman 17 May 1637. Before 1639 he removed to Hartford, CT where he was one of the original proprietors. In the first volume of Land Records for distribution of lands in Feb 1639, there are several parcels of land in Hartford on the Connecticut River going to Richard Bichard and his heirs forever. Shortly after Oct 1647 he removed to Saybrook, where on 15 May 1650 he was a Deputy to the General Court for Saybrook. He soon after this removed to Marthas Vineyard, though still holding land in Hartford and Saybrook. His house lot was at Great Harbor in Edgartown. He and others were appointed to make divisions of land of the 'Necks' on 20 May 1653. In 1654 he was elected Town Clerk of Edgartown. In 1865 he served as assistant to the Magistrate. He was said to have been a close personal friend of Gov. Winthrop, and it was probably this friendship that led the Governor to go out on that cold winter day to marry Thomas's daughter and Jonathan Rudd.
