Eagle River resident Milford B. "Johnny" Johnson, 85, died Oct. 11, 2003, at Valley Hospital in Palmer of pancreatic cancer. A graveside service with full military honors was at Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in the Butte. A celebration of life followed at the Eagle River VFW Post.

Mr. Johnson was born May 2, 1918, in Sumner County, Kan., to Preston and Angeline Johnson. After graduating from high school, he served in the Army Air Corps from 1939-45. During World War II, he served in Burma, the East Indies and New Guinea. Mr. Johnson moved to Alaska in 1952 to homestead in Eagle River Valley. He was employed by the Alaska Territorial Commission, building the Knik-Wasilla Road. He was also employed by Northern Air Cargo as an aircraft mechanic and then the Fort Richardson Power Plant until his retirement in 1973. He belonged to the VFW, Lions Club and the Elks. In his later years, Mr. Johnson enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising a garden and tending his greenhouse. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family said: "Johnny 'Grandpa Cookie' was a devoted and kind father and grandfather. He was the fabric that bonded our family together. He was our guiding light in teaching his wisdom of life's values of hard work, family love, resilience and compassion. Like others of his generation, he was no stranger to hard work and accepted hardship as a minor obstacle to overcome without complaint. At the age of 9, he was orphaned by the death of his mother and spent his childhood earning his room and board on the farms of his relatives."

He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Hayes of Lacey, Wash.; son, Preston Johnson of Eagle River; and grandchildren, Ginger and Cliff Fletcher, Ross and Heather Johnson, Aaron and Robin Johnson, Kurt amd Katie Johnson of Eagle River, Brad Hayes, Kellie and Keith Wright of Arizona, Jeff Hayes of Washington, eight great-grandchildren; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene; and sisters Albertine and Genevieve. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 204, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were with Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
