Lena "Jerry" Payne Aug. 13, 1913 May 31, 2010 Resident of Pinole Lena (Wieman) was born in Turner County, South Dakota, the seventh of ten children. Having lost her Mother at age seven, she quickly acquired many household skills and established her caring nature taking responsibility for her younger siblings in this large farm family. Lena graduated from Marion High School in 1930 (Valedictorian) and went on to South State Teachers College. She had taught country school for six years when a romance blossomed with John "Jack" Payne from the neighboring community of Hurley. They decided to make their home in California. Jack went ahead and Lena joined him in 1937. They were married in Richmond on July 6th and settled in Pinole. It was at that time that Lena adopted the nickname "Jerry." Jim and Donna came along (1938 and 1941). After the War, Jerry worked as an office manager/bookkeeper, first for a grocery firm, then Capwells and finally, for the City of Pinole Finance Department, retiring in 1971. Jerry devoted much of her life to Jim and Donna and to the Church she loved, Pinole United Methodist. She served with Mary Martha Circle and hosted a weekly Bible study for the past 14 years, resulting in many cherished friendships. She loved: long driving trips through the US and Canada with Jack; a Europe jaunt in 1978 taking her to her roots; a Hawaii cruise; feeding everyone around her (she was a GREAT cook and hostess); playing Bridge every week with her special friends; her daily crossword; sewing, knitting and crocheting remarkable things for family, friends and the needy; shopping for little gifts; sitting in her leather chair with the view of the flowers, yard and the birds. Most of all, she loved the interaction with family and friends. Jerry never had an unkind word. Her world was caring for others. She was often sought out for her wisdom and judgment. Lena "Jerry" was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved Jack (2000), all of her siblings plus some nieces and nephews. She is survived by her son Jim Payne of Pinole and her daughter Donna Payne-Cope of Martinez.
