"PETER H. MARKS, Sr.
Funeral services for Peter H. Marks, Sr., 80, of Ashton, were held December 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon; Dr. Kenneth Arnold officiating. Burial was in Gilman Township Cemetery of Ashton. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon was in charge of the arrangements.
Peter Henry Marks, Sr., was born May 26, 1921 to John Peter and Guepke (Kannegieter) Marks. He lived on the family farm and attended Dale Township Country School #6 near Ashton. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II; after his discharge, he returned to the Ashton area. On February 19, 1946 he married Wilma Bertha Schmidt in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. The couple made their first home in the country school near Ashton, where Pete received his education. Later they moved to the Peters family homestead, where they resided until his death. Pete was a farmer, and also owned and operated Pete's Place in Ashton for 20 years. He died December 15 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D
Pete was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, the American Legion in Ashton and the Sibley Veterans of Foreigh Wars. He enjoyed finshing, playing baseball, gardening and was a very good cook.
Survivors include his wife; their three children, Anna Fischer, (Don) of Pella; Peter Marks Jr. od Des Moines; and Walter Marks, George; two grandchildren, Kristin (Paul) Smith and Craig Fischer; two great-grandchildren; one sister Coleen Redlinger of Lake Benton, MN; broter "Junior" John and Mrge Kannegieter of Little Rock; a step-sister Betty Markus of Bigelow, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-mother Hattie Marks."

Pete, the son of John and Guepke (Kannegieter) Marks was born May 2, 1921 west of Ashton. He attended rural school, worked for his father and joined the Army during WWII. Wilma Schmidt was born near Ashton, and taught at Dale school, [photograph of a woman & man]"

"where the Marks family attended. She and Pete married in 1946, and they lived in that little country schoolhouse until moving to the Marks homestead. After farming for several years, Pete owned and operated Pete's Place in Ashton until 1988. Pete was a good cook, liked gardening, but his real love was fishing. He died in 2001, and is burid in Gilman Cemeter. Wilma and Pete are parents of three children: Ann (Fischer), Peter Jr. and Walt. They also have grand and great-grandchildren. Wilma was involved in the operation of their bar/restaurant. She served as President of the Legion Auxiliary from 1968 - 1971. At the present time she resides at Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon."
