Note: regarding ÿ (hold control & type 152 on the number pad). Deciphering Dutch & German hand-writing can be difficult. My father-in-law was born with family name = Meijer. Upon coming to America, he converted to Meyer. I accused him of simply erasing the 2 dots from the long-hand Meijer. Try it. Mostly, just across the border to the west, the Dutch also use an i-j ligature as one character. This can be easily read as a y with a diæresis (Germans call the 2 dots Umlaut). I have found cases where the i-j ligature begins the name. In those cases, the transliteration into a typewritten font is clear because BOTH the I and the J are written in upper case followed by lower case for the rest of the name. So, when searching for names like Meyer, be sure to include the i-j ligature (I do not know the international table of alphabets code for the i-j ligature). Also include Meÿer and Meijer. Even the native users of the Dutch & German languages made misinterpretations of the hand-writing. - D. A. Navorska - x Apr MMXXI - in proximo Grove, OK.
