Isbrandena "Dena" Kurtzleben Hippen Birth 5 Feb 1871 German Township, Grundy County, Iowa, USA Death 24 May 1952 (aged 81) Wellsburg, Grundy County, Iowa, USA Burial East Friesland Cemetery Grundy County, Iowa, USA Plot 2A-39-W2 Memorial ID 86066124
Mrs. Frank Hippen, nee Dena Kurtzleben, was born on February 5, 1871 in German township, Grundy County, Iowa, and passed away on May 24, 1952, at the Jake Hippen home. She attained the age of 81 years, 3 months and 19 days.
All of her life was spent in this community. Having grown to womanhood and being blest with such opportunities that were offered in the earlier days she entered upon the voyage of life. On March 9, 1893, she was united in marriage to Mr. Frank Hippen. They made their home together first on a farm in German township until they moved on their farm in Pleasant Valley township where they lived for 22 years; then, in the spring of 1939, they moved to the town of Wellsburg for their retirement. This couple raised a large family, but unfortunately they lost five infants and one married daughter through death.
After the passing of Mr. Hippen, Mrs. Hippen made her home alone and was blest with many days of joy and fair health. At the beginning of this year her health began to fail, because the serious affliction of cancer had seized her bodily constitution. She underwent an operation for temporary relief and recovery, but after surgery she remained weak and more or less exhausted.
She was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hippen joined this church by letter of transfer from the East Friesland Presbyterian Church on July 12, 1939. Mrs. Hippen was a faithful attendant to the services on Sundays. She delighted in all christian programs and sacred reading. At last she felt like a weary pilgrim who had to lean heavily upon the staff of His Word and Spirit for comfort and grace to fight the good fight of faith.
At her passing she leaves to mourn two daughters: Mrs. Sicko Luchtenburg of Grundy Center and Mrs. Fred Harms of Gladbrook; four sons: Jake, Herman, and Henry of Wellsburg and John of Aplington; 32 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Martin Greenfield of Ackley, besides many other relatives and friends.
Those who preceded her in death were her husband on January 16, 1944; five infants and her daughter, Mrs. John Geiken on Dec. 18, 1951.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Jake Hippen home at 1:00 p.m. and later at the Reformed church. Officiating at the services were Rev. E. Jurgens and Rev. C. Siemsen. Burial was in the East Friesland cemetery.
