Colleen Vohs, age 80, of Storm Lake, and formerly of Galva, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Naomi Colleen Thompson was born on Sept. 14, 1929 in Soldier, to Nel and Violet (Kline) Thompson. She attended grade school at Jordan Township Country School in rural Soldier, graduating from Soldier High School in 1947.
Colleen was baptized and confirmed on Aug. 26, 1945, at the Soldier Lutheran Country Church in Soldier. She was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein, having served as a member of WELCA and Church Circle. Additionally, Colleen was active in church quilting, in both Holstein and Storm Lake.
On April 20, 1952, Colleen was united in marriage to Lester Vohs in the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier. This couple was blessed with four children: Jeffrey, Julie, Lisa and Joel.
Over the years, Colleen was an active member of the Buena Vista Hospital Auxiliary and SERPACI Antique Car Club. She volunteered at the Buena Vista Coffee and Gift Shop and quilted for World Relief at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein and St. Mark Lutheran in Storm Lake. For over 55 years, Colleen and Lester enjoyed playing cards with their 500 card group. Additionally, Colleen looked forward to walking with her Early Morning Walking Group.
Colleen was a dedicated and devoted homemaker and mother. She found much pleasure in making quilts for her family, doing needlework, making porcelain dolls, and painting Santa's for her children and family (as a special Christmas gift each year.) More than anything, Colleen loved and cherished her family and the time they spent together. She will forever be remembered for her giving and gentle spirit and as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Those left to cherish Colleen's memory are her husband of 57 years, Lester Vohs of Storm Lake; her children: Jeffrey (Loriane) Vohs of Galva; Julie (Ken) Hansen of Milford; Lisa (Randy) Tjaden of Titonka; Joel (Wendy) Vohs of Galva; grandchildren: Chad (Amy) Vohs of Polk City; Tyler Vohs of Ames; Michelle Vohs of Ankeny; Jamie (Sheldon) Nalos of Vancouver, Wash.; Brian (Rebecca) Hansen of Kansas City, Mo.; Kristin (Jonathan) Dennis of Mission, Kan.; Stephen Tjaden of Natchitoches, La.; David Tjaden of Iowa City; Jacob Tjaden of Iowa City; Jaycie, Cadey and Tiegen Vohs, all of Galva; three great grandchildren: Braden and Ashlyn Nalos and Abigail Price; one brother, Elmer (Raphael) Thompson of Branson, Mo.; one sister, Carol Dose of Mapleton; two brothers-in-law: Leo Carlson and George Leonard and extended family and many friends.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, Nel and Violet Thompson; one brother, Frank Voss; three sisters: Emma Thies, Virginia Carlson and Dolores Leonard; two sisters-in-law: Irene Voss and Pat Thompson; and two brothers-in-law, Walt Thies and Wilbert Dose."
