"Sharon Kay Stohr Becomes Bride of George E. Uken at Immanuel Lutheran

Nuptial vows were spoken on Monday evening, March 6 by Sharon Kay Stohr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stohr of Woden, and George E. Uken, son of Mr. John Uken of Titonka, as they were united in marriage at the Immanuel Lutheran Churchat Titonka at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Don Salberg of Titonka performed the double ring ceremony with the couple standing at an altar graced with bouquets of white mums in vases and potted mums tied with deep rose ribbon. The pews were marked with white satin bows.

"The Lord's Prayer" and "Wedding Prayer" were sung by Miss Judy DeBoer of Titonka. Miss Carolyn Engelbarts was the organist.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white peau de soie floor length gown with Chantilly lace sieves. The neckline was a V shape at the back, and scalloped at the front with sequin trim. She wore a small lace pillbox hat trimmed with sequins and a net veil. The bridal bouquet consisted of carnation, roses and hyacinth blossoms.

Thelma Stohr of Woden, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids were Mrs. Marlene Uken, sister-in-law of the groom, and Mildred Ullmann, a friend of the bride, both of Titonka. They were attired in deep rose lustersatin street length bell shaped dresses with shoes to match. They wore cab-"

"bage rose headpieces and carried cascade bouquets of feathered mums. Anita Schutter of Titonka, cousin of the bride, was the flower girl and wore a dress similar to the bridesmaids.

Edward Uken of Titonka, a nephew of the groom, was the best man and the groomsmen were Elmer Ricks of Titonka, cousin of the groom, and Ralph Wesselman of Algona, a friend of the groom. The ring bearer was Gary Uken, a brother of the groom and the ushers were Ronald Christensen of Woden, brother-in-law of the bride, Melvin Ricks of Titonka, cousin of the groom, Bueford Stohr, cousin ofthe bride, and Russell Meyering, a friend, both of Woden. The latter two men were also candle lighters.

A reception was held for 175 guests following the ceremony with Mrs. Melvin Ricks as hostess. Guests attending were from Britt, Woden, Titonka, Bancroft, Thompson, Buffalo Center, Stratord, Charles City, Crystal Lake and Algona, Iowa;and Mankato, Sleepy Eye and Arlington, Minn.

The newlyweds left for a weding trip to California and southern states and returned on .larch 17. They are residing on farm 2 miles south and 3/4 mile west of Titonka.

Mrs. Uken is a 1962 graduate of the Woden-Crystal Lake High school and attended Mankato Commercial College at Mankato, Minnesota. She is employed as a bookkeeper at the Titonka Savings Bank. Mr. Uken attended the Titonka Consolidated School and is engaged in farming."

George Erwin Uken was born June 24, 1930 at Titonka, Iowa, to John Henry and Christina (Ricks) Uken. George attended school then worked with his parents on the farm. He was later hired out as a farm hand and a carpenter before traveling to California to work in an airplane plant. In 1952, George was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served his country until 1954. Following his discharge, George came back to Titonka and began farming again. On March 6, 1964, George was united in marriage to Sharon Stohr at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Titonka. To this union, two children, Gene and Jill were born. George farmed the family farm until he and Sharon moved into Titonka in 1996.

George enjoyed farming, traveling, and playing golf. His greatest enjoyment was playing card games with the grandchildren. Every year he enjoyed a Marine Reunion with two other Marines in eastern Iowa. George was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Titonka where he ushered for over 60 years. He was also a Buffalo Township Trustee.

George became a resident of the Titonka Care Center on Friday, September 7, 2012 and died there early Tuesday morning, September 11, 2012 at the age of 82.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of Titonka; son Gene Uken and wife Deb of Titonka; daughter Jill and husband Brent Gavin of St. Mary's, Iowa as well as four grandchildren, Katie and Sara Uken and Brady and Isaac Gavin. George was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ed Uken in 1980 and sister-in-law Marlene Uken.
