Funeral services for John Fredrick Berschman were held on Monday, August 12 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. John passed away Tuesday, August 6 at the Titonka Care Center at the age of 86years, 11 months, 18 days.
John F. Berschman was born on August 24, 1926 in Lakota, IA. the youngest of twin sons born to Heyo and Flora (Schaefer) Berschman. John was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church in Lakota. John attended country school untilthe 10th grade when he had to quit to work for his dad and area farmers. He joined the US Navy January 27, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on July 12, 1946. John was a cook on the USS Winged Arrow which was a Navy supply shipwith stops at Sipan, Taipan and Guam. John was extremely proud of his time spent serving his country in the United States Navy and loved attending his annual naval reunions. John was also a Boxing Champion at the Great Lakes Naval Base.
On October 6, 1948 John married the neighbor girl, Jane Smidt. To this union were [sic] blessed five children: Timothy, Ronald, Debra, Joann and Denise. In 1962, they moved from Lakota to a farm north of Buffalo Center where they farmeduntil 1976 when he retired due to health reasons. He loved to tinker on old tractors and bought into the Allis Chalmers dealership in 1984. John and Jane moved off the farm into Buffalo Center in 1995. One won't forgot [sic] his hugesmile and that twinkle in his eye when he saw his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, or those silly songs he always sang and then stuck in your head for days!
In October 2012 John became a resident at the Titonka Care Center and enjoyed visiting with the residents, staff and visitors until the time of his death.
Left to mourn are: his wife of 64 years, Jane; son Tim (Vicki) Berschman; daughters Deb (Doug) Aukes and Joann (Paul) Steffensen all of Buffalo Center and Denise (Jim) Watkins of Urbana, IL. Seven Grandchildren Nicole (Keven) Seng of Waterloo; Brooke (Michael) Shipman of Greensboro, NC; Wade Aukes of Buffalo Center, Bridget Aukes of Iowa City, Tony (Emily) Steffensen of Sioux Falls, SD; Abby (Blake) Kessler of Des Moines; and Alison Watkins of Urbana, IL. fivegreat-grandchildren; Jade and Brady Seng, Payton, Briley and Jensen Steffensen. His sister Kay Newel of Newton, IA; twin brother Joe (Dorothy) of Buffalo Center, brother-in-laws [sic] Pete (Pat) Smidt of Fayetteville, AK [Arkansas, notAlaska] and bill (Arvilla) Smidt of Blue Springs, MO.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a son Ronald; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and donald Clapper; brother-in-law Gene Newel and nephew Brian Newel."

John Berschman, age 86 of Buffalo Center passed away Tuesday August 6, 2013 at the Titonka Care Center.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Monday August 12, 2013 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Sunday August 11 also at the Church. Interment will be at the Olena Mound Cemetery of Buffalo Center.
