"CATON GEORGE R., White Eyes township; farmer; postoffice, Chili, Ohio; born December 18, 1831, in White Eyes township; son of Thomas and Mary (Ringer) Caton; a native of Pennsylvania, but came to White Eyes township among the firstsettlers of the township; George R. was brought up in the township. Mr. Caton was married in February, 1855, to Miss Lucinda, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Hughes McCoIlum, formerly of Pennsylvania. They became the parents of ninechildren, viz: Franklin, Lafayette, Mary Alice, married to Michael Sherman, now residing in White Eyes township, Sarah Jane, Thomas J., Elsworth C., James L., George W., Solemma Bell and U. S. Grant. Mr. Caton has succeeded well as afarmer, having a good home for a large family."

George R. Caton, residing on his valuable and well improved farm in White Eyes township, is a native of this township, his birth having here occurred on the 18th of December, 1831 . His parents, Thomas and Mary (Ringer) Caton, who wereboth natives of Greene county, Pennsylvania , were among the earliest settlers of White Eyes township. They passed away in the year 1845. Of their family of nine children, only three survive, namely: George R., of this review; Catherine,the wife of Calvin Ferrell, of Fresno , Ohio ; and Perry, of White Eyes township.
George R. Caton was reared on a farm in his native township and attended the district schools during the winter months. When twenty-four years of age he began farming on his own account by renting a tract of land in White Eyes township,being engaged in its operation for six years. On the expiration of that period he purchased a farm of one hundred and fifteen acres, on which he lived for sixteen years, bringing the land under a high state of cultivation. He builtthereon a commodious and substantial residence and good barns and otherwise improved the place. In 1876 he purchased his present farm of one hundred and twenty-four acres in White Eyes township, giving considerable attention to theraising of cattle, horses and hogs in addition to the work of the fields. He also has a drove of two hundred sheep, and in both his farming and stock-raising interests has met with a gratifying and well merited measure of success. At onetime his holdings comprised two hundred and forty acres of land, but he has since sold a portion of this and now owns one hundred and ninety acres. In 1902 he rented his place and removed to Fresno , but as life on the farm was morecongenial to him and also owing to the fact that his son Grant wished to engage in agricultural pursuits, he returned to his farm in the spring of 1908. The place is now being conducted by the son.
On the 2nd of February, 1855, Mr. Caton was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda McCollum, a native of Crawford township, Coshocton county, who passed away in 1905, when seventy-five years of age. Her parents, Thomas and Sarah (Hughes)McCollum, who were natives of Pennsylvania , were early settlers of Crawford township and reared a family of twelve children. Unto our subject and his wife were born nine children, namely: Lafayette, of West Lafayette, Ohio; Alice, thewife of William Patterson, of Columbus, Ohio; Jane, the wife of John Thomas, of Idaho; Thomas, of the Caton Business College, who makes his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Elsworth, residing in Strasburg, Ohio; James, of Parkersburg, WestVirginia; George, living in Detroit; Saloma, deceased; and Grant, at home.
In his political views Mr. Caton is a republican, and has served as township trustee and in face in all local township offices, ever discharging his public duties in prompt and capable manner. He is also acting as trustee in the MethodistEpiscopal church, with which he has held membership relations for the past forty years. Having resided in this county throughout his entire life, or for a period of seventy-seven years, he is well and favorably known here and is a highlyrespected and worthy citizen.

OBIT: Monday, 13 Sep 1926 - Coshocton Tribune, pg 1 George R. Caton, Aged 95, Died at Home of His Son George R. Caton, aged 95, lifelong resident of Fresno, died at the home of his son, Grant Caton, at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. He was one of the oldest residents of this county. Mr. Caton was born December 18, 1831 near Fresno. On February 1, 1855 he was united by marriage to Lucinda J. McCollum. Since the death of his wife, 22 years ago, he has made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. GrantCaton. Forty-two years ago he became affiliated with the Kimble M.E. church and later transferred his membership to the Fresno M.E. Church. Thruout his long life he has made many friends. Mr. Caton has been a highly respected citizen and aprominent farmer of the Fresno vicinity. He took an active part in the farm duties until a few years ago, retaining remarkable physical and mental strength until death. He is survived by five sons, Thomas of Minneapolis, Minn., James of Denver, Col., George of Detroit, Mich., Elsworth and Grant of Fresno; one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Thomas of Denver, Col.; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Ferrell and a brotherPerry Caton, both of Fresno; 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. One son, Lafayette and two daughters, Alice and Solema preceded him to the grave. The funeral procession will leave the late home at 10 oÙuclock Thursday morning and proceed to the M.E. church at Fresno where services will be in charge of Rev. M. W. Zimmerman. Burial will be made in the Kimble cemetery, near Fresno.
