Mr. and Mrs. Pete Smidt of Fayetteville, AR will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary with a card shower.

Pete and Pat joined in holy matrimony on September 2, 1947 at Good Hope Methodist Church in Algona, IA. Their years have been blessed with seven children: Jack, David, Mark, Mary, Lois, Philip, and Jared; sixteen grandchildren: Jason,Sarah, Matthew, Elizabeth, Naomi, Jeremiah, Adam, Gaby, Shiela, Jacob, Nathaniel, Elisabeth, Satchel, Solomon, Seth, and Samuel; six great-grandchildren: Megan, Caleb, Nicholas, Joshua, Aaron and Rebekah.

Betty said that Pete Smidt died today. When David asked who made the Face Book announcement, Betty said "Mary". Mary Hillburg is Pete's daughter. The death occurred in the morning and it was unexpected.

At a memorial service for Pete, his confirmation booklet was on display. It showed Pete was confirmed at St. Paul's Ev. Luth. Chr., in Lakota, IA on viii May MCMXXXVIII The service was held on Wed. 27 Dec 2017 in Fayetteville, AR.

Peter Wilm Smidt, age 94, passed away suddenly in his Fayetteville home on Tuesday, December 5. He was born in Ostfriesland, Germany on March 3, 1923.

As a young child he immigrated to the United States with his parents Jasper and Berenje Smidt and settled on a farm in northern Iowa. When he was 20 years old, his farming life was interrupted by World War II, as he was deployed to the South Pacific where he remained for over 2 years, fighting in ground combat for the US Army in New Guinea, the Philippines, and the Japanese Occupation. During the Leyte Island operation in the Philippines, his unit, the 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, was cited for "conspicuous gallantry and the accomplishment of an extremely hazardous mission" by G.C. Marshall, the United States Secretary of War. Marshall also commended the unit for their "outstanding courage and fortitude", characteristics that Peter would continue to exemplify in his life after the war.

Upon returning home at a time when no one understood the devastating after affects of war and PTSD, he carved out a life that would remain consistent and steadfast, following his father's footsteps and remaining a farmer. In 1946 he met his wife Patricia and they were married on September 2, 1947. True to his character and the vows of commitment exchanged on that day, he remained side by side with her for 70 years until his death finally parted them.

He and his wife raised 7 children on their farm in Iowa, instilling in each one the value of integrity, hard work and responsibility. Even though he personally had to leave school after 9th grade to work on the family farm, he was a strong advocate of quality education and served on the Lakota, Iowa school board and took great interest and pride in the academic achievements of his children.

He was a devoted Christian who modeled a lifestyle of service and faith as he served as a church deacon, Sunday School teacher, worker with the Okoboji Lakes Bible and Missionary Conference, and a Gideon speaker and distributor. He also had a wonderful singing voice and he and his brother William enjoyed singing songs about Jesus whom they both loved with all their hearts.

After leaving farming in 1983, he had a second career with the Green Giant company in Blue Earth, Minnesota where he became a popular and well-respected supervisor who won people over, both his peers and those he supervised, with his strong work ethic and friendly, patient personality.

He retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1997 where he and his wife Pat were active in the Evangelical Free Church. They later moved to Fayetteville where some of his best times were spent ushering Razorback football game where his outgoing nature and genuine interest in everyone he met made him many friends.

Those that knew Peter were greatly influenced by him and will remember him as a man of strong character. He had the ability to make people laugh and smile as his humor, loyalty, kindness, and consistency endeared many to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bill. Survivors include his his wife of 70 years Patricia, his children Jack (Carol Jo) of Buffalo Center, Iowa; David (Helen) of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Mark of Fayetteville; Mary Hillburg (Daryl) of Algona, Iowa; Lois Joy of Boone, Iowa; Phil (Jennifer) of Lynnwood, Washington; Jared (Laura) of Gig Harbor, Washington, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his sister Jane of Buffalo Center, Iowa; and his well-loved Schnauzer Sisi.

Burial with military honors will take place in the National Cemetery in Fayetteville. A private memorial service will follow.
