"Hinrich and Maria arrived in the United States on or about March 29, 1885 with their eight children. Their oldest son John had arrived two years earlier.
It is believed that Gerhard Harms was the sponsor for the Hinrichs family. Most of the immigrants had someone in this country who would help them get settled and perhaps helpm them financially. The story is told that the Hinrichs famlyarrived in Shell Rock by train and Gerhard Harms was supposed to be there to pick them up. There was a mix-up in the time schedul and Gerhard wasn't there. The Hinrichs walked the eight miles to the Harms farm southwest of Shell Rock. This unfortunate event would have been a discouraging start for the travel weary family. The Harms farm was located in Jefferson Township, section 16 and is the present day Russell DeBower farm. Hinrich worked for Gerhard Harms part-timeon a drainage ditch project that first year.
Hinrich and family first lived in a log cabin on that place that Don Henrichs now lives on (Jefferson Township, section 17). A year or two later they moved southeast across the section to the place now owned by Rick Wangsness (Freeseplace). Marie Hinders can remember her mother ttelling that the house on the Freese site was a log cabin and all the kids had to crowd into the loft to sleep. The third location they lived at was a half mile north of the Oltman LimeQuarry. Then, in 1893, they bought the farm on Highway 14 in Ripley Township, section 13, northeast quarter and section 12, southhalf of the southeast quarter. Here they farmed, raised their children, and died on this farm. Hinrich diedAugust 21, 1918 of stomach cancer.
The church bell that was on the Ebenezer Lutheran Church two miles east of Butler Center (Jefferson Township, section 9) was given by Maria in memory of Hinrich. That bell is now displayed at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, IA.Nearly all members of Hinrich and his brother Siebelt's family were members of this church. The Ebenezer church was started in 1890 and disbanded in 1955.
Maria continued to live with her daughter Mttie and husband Claus Hoodjer who took over the farming operation when Hinrich. Maria died April 9, 1926."
