After attending schools in Kanawha, he began farming with his father. Richard married Sadie Honken on November 22, 1951. To this union, two children were born, Avis (Nieman) Shirer & Marvin Neiman. The couple resided on a farm in Kanawha, where they raised their children. They were active members of the Kanawha Methodist Church.
Richard was very passionate about farming, which he was able to do for 50 plus years. He was belonged to Jaycees and was also a 4-H leader. After Sadie's death, he filled his days with farming, building grain bins, welding, as well as working as a general laborer in the building and construction industry. Something very memorable for Richard were the times he went with his brother, John. John drove freight to California and brought loads of fresh fruit and vegetables back to the Midwest. He was able to go on several of these cross-country trips. He also had the opportunity to deliver motorhomes with his brother Roger. This opportunity allowed him to visit and explore every state in the continental US. Richard also became a business entrepreneur when he opened a country western night club in Lake Cornelia. He also enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada with his family and friends. Richard enjoyed snowmobiling and drove the groomer for the snowmobile association. He enjoyed road trips; including a few to Texas for the winter as well as attending auctions. Every May, he hosted his annual birthday/retirement party. He enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends and all of the planning that went into his special celebration!!
Richard will be greatly missed. His outgoing personality enabled him to make friends easily. He lived a good life; and was able to maintain an optimistic outlook despite some of the great losses he suffered. He was blessed with good health, and was able to live independently in his own home, until the last six months of his life.
Richard is survived by his children Avis Shirer (Bill Cook) of Britt, and Marvin (Linda) Nieman of Forest City; brothers Roger (Renee) Nieman, Gary (Judy) Nieman, two grandchildren Jennifer Shirer-Vaske & Greg (Julie Monson) Nieman; 4 great grandchildren Nolan Vakse, Jaxson Vaske, Preston Vaske & Brenna Nieman; 4 step grandchildren Allen (Katie) Stokka, Anthony Stokka, Andrea (Ed) Sandford, and Aadne Stokka; step great grandchildren Emmorie (Eric) Cox, Austin Stokka, Chase Stokka; step great-great grandchildren Kayden & Karson Stokka.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sadie in 1981; son in-law Thomas Shirer; granddaughter Amy Nieman; brothers Albert, George and John Nieman; sisters-in law Edith, Janet, and Mavis; a special friend, Joyce Wilson.
