"Edward Symens, Sr. -- was born at Freeport, Illinois in 1872, a son of Ude Symens who had come from Germany some years before. In Germany Edward's father was a cloth dyer, making beautiful cloth of many lovely colors."

"Edward lived in Illinois until he was a young man, then came to Lyon County. Here, in 1897, he married Hilke Groote who had come from Grundy Center, Iowa. Edward and his wife made their home one mile north and five miles east ofGeorge, on the farm now occupied by his son Arthur J. Symens.
