John Groen Died, Funeral Held Here Tueday Afternoon
Funeral services for John Groen, a resident of this community for 40 years, were held on Tuesday afternoon, December 2 at the First Congregational church in Buffalo Center. Interment was in Olena Mound cemetery. Rev. John D. Engelsconducted the services.
John Groen, son of John an Henrietta Groen, was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, on July 16, 1871. At the age of eight he immigrated with his parents to this country, coming to Grundy County, Iowa, where they settled on a farm. Later thefamily moved to Kossuth County, near Wesley, Iowa, where the decease grew to manhood. As a young man he started farming for him self on"a farm located two miles south of Buffalo Center. Later he purchased his own farm six and one-halfmiles southeast of Buffalo Center, where he lived for about 23 years. In 1941 he retired from the farm and for the past 11 years Mr. Groen has lived with relatives. During this time he lived with the John Troff family at Woden for aboutfive years, and for the past six years had made his home with his niece, Mr. and Mrs. John Honken of Buffalo Center.
Mr. Groen had been in poor health for the past five years, and just a week prior to his death it became necessary to take him to the hospital.
Death occurred on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 29, 1952, shortly before two o'clock. Death came as a result of a heart ailment and complications due to the infirmities of his advanced age. Mr Groen had reached the age of 81 years, 4 monthsand 13 days.
Surviving are several niece and nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brother and one sister.
