'6 Members of Family Are Killed

Six members of a Sandusky family, former residents here were killed in a traffic crash Christmas Eve while enroute to spend the holiday with relatives in Birmingham, Mich., on Route 2, three miles west of Port Clinton. Dead are Mr and Mrs. Curtis Armitage, Route 1, Sandusky; their two children, Robert, three years and Beverly, six months, and Mrs. Armitage's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marion L. Viers, Sr., also of Ropute 1 Sandusky.

Mr. Armitage, 26, had been an employe of the American Baler Co. here almost since its beginning four years ago. The pland and office were both closed this afternoon to permit employes to attend the funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Armitage and their two children in Attica.

Men of the company were pallbearers, and the funeral services were private except for members of the family and the employes of the plant and office.

Mr. and Mrs. Viers were former residents of the city also, having moved to Sandusky about five years ago. The two families lived together in a home on Columbus Ave., at the corner of Perkins and Columbus Ave. at the city limits of Sandusky. Mr. Armitage, a Nave veteran, commuted to his work here. * * * The two families were enroute to spend the holiday with Mrs. Armitage's brother, Marion Viers, Jr., and his wife, the former Evelyn DeHart, both of whom formerly resided here. Mrs. Armitage, 23, the former Lydia Viers, was graduated from Bellevue High School in 1943 and was employed at the Northern Ohio Telephone Co. before her marriage.

Funeral services for the Viers will be held Tuesday [28 Dec 1948] in the Frey Funeral Home, Sandusky, at 10 a.m. and burial will be in Butternut Ridge Cemetery, North Olmstead. Services this afternoon for the Armitage family were held in the Weaver Funeral Home, Attica, at 2 p.m. and burial was in Attica Cemetery.

According to locat State Patrolman Joseph Swartz who investigated the crash the driver of the truck involved in the crash is in critical condition in Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton. He is Robert E. Dawes, 33, Sandusky, and he suffered the loss of an arm, a fractured skull and shock. A passenger in the truck, Joseph H. Boudreau, 25, Hudson, was not hurt.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur O. Pike, Toledo, and thier children, Janice, fin\\ve, and Gregory, six months, occupants of the third vehicle involved in the crash, suffered minor injuries. * * * The truck and tractor, operated east by Mr. Dawes, passed the Pike car, also going east. The Armitage car, enroute west, swung to the left to avoid a collision, but was struck on the right side by the truck. The blow ripped the side from the car. The car then struck the Pike automobile broadside, rolling it over. The Armitage car was demolished. All of the family were believed instantly killed with the exception of the three-year-old Robert, who died several hours later in Magruder Hospital, the State Patrolman said.

The truck careened out of control for over a 100 feet and upset. Mr. Dawes' arm was caught beneath the wreckage until a wrecking crew lifted the vehicle from the limb. * * * The accident happened at 8 p.m. just east of Camp Perry.

Ralston Armitage, a brother of the dead man, is also employed at the local plant. Parents of the dead youth are Mr. and Mrs. John Armitage. Two sisters and trhee brothers survive.

The Viers are survived by their son, Marion Jr., and an daughter, Mrs. Carl Lapp of Hawthorne, Calif., also a former resident here. Mrs. Viers, 57, has three sisters, Mr. Viers, 61, has no immediate survivors.'
