Charles H. Blizzard born in Baltimore, Maryland, May 6, 1832, was a great grandson of Caleb Stansbury. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Representative Men of Maryland and District of Columbia, Vol. 1 pp. 113 and 114, gives the followinghistory of the Stansbury-Blizzard Line. He was the son of Caleb Stansbury Blizzard and his wife, Mary Thomas Blizzard. His great grandfather Caleb Stansbury was one of the first settlers in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was in the Armyof the Revolution and his sons fought in the war of 1812.
They were well-to-do farmers and possessed considerable means. His grandfather, Isaiah Blizzard was a French Huguenot. He died early in life, and his wife also, leaving two young children, Caleb Stansbury Blizzard, and a younger sister,who were brought up by their mothers' father, Caleb Stansbury. This gentleman live to the age of ninety years. At his death, all his slaves were set free.
The father of Charles H. Blizzard is a resident of Hampstead, Carrol County, Maryland. (1879). He has always been a member of the Methodist Church, as first organized in this County, having united with it in his youth. He is now 77 years,and active as a man 50. He never drank a drop of intoxicating liquor in his life, and never used tobacco in any form.
His wife was Mary Thomas, and was from the Eastern Shore and of a good family. When Charles H. was four years old, they moved to Owen's Mills, Baltimore county, and remained four years, after which they removed to Carroll County,returning when he was thirteen to the neighborhood of Owen's Mills. He then found an opportunity to attend school, but only in the winter season; the othermonths he worked on the farm. He afterwards attended Franklin Academy atReisterstown. When eighteen, he went back to Baltimore to learn the butchers trade, but found it repugnant to him, so he went back to the farm.
In 1854 he went West as far as Illinois. He married Mary A. Kingsley in 1854. The next June he returned to Baltimore. In 1857, he was appointed to the uniformed police, where he served till 1861, when he took charge of the farm until1863. He returned to the police force for five years and resigned to become sexton of Old St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church at the corner of Sharp and German Streets. In July 1869, the Society having sold the Old Church, commencedthe erection of a new one at Druid Hill Avenue and Lanvale Street. During the four years in which it was being built, they kept Mr. Blizzard on his regular salary. This afforded him leisure which he turned to best account by learningcabinet making and the undertaking business.
In 1876 he established himself in the undertaking business. He erected a building, numbers 197-201 Pennsylvania Avenue. Here he has ever since conducted the business with very great success.
In 1874, he invented a patent case for preservation of bodies in ice, which is acknowledged to be one of the best in the country. He still continues section of St. Peter's Church of which he is a member.
He has five children; William H.; Mary Kate; George H.; Albert Littell, and Annie May, the eldest of whom is twenty-two years of age and the youngest twelve.(This was written in 1879)
Mr. Charles H. Blizzard is member of and has held high offices in most of the following organizations: FreeMasons, Odd Fellows, Red Men, Independent Mechanics, American Mechanics, Unknown Friends, Knights of the Golden Star, and Sons ofTemperance. In his political affiliations, he was formerly a Whig, and now a Republican.
