A Memorial service in Witness to the Resurrection for Lillian M. Waalkes, 82, will be conducted at the First Reformed Church in Aplington on Saturday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m. The worship will be held by members of the family. Rev. RobertDeYoung will officiate. Carol DeYoung is the organist along with pianist Arlene Jutting. The reader will be Ike Jutting. Lillian passed away on Friday, April 6, 2001 at the Presbyterian Village of Ackley. Inurnment will be in thePleasant View Cemetery in Aplington. Schwartz Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Lillian M. Waalkes, daughter of August and Hermina (Albers) Jutting, was born in Buffalo Center. She attended Buffalo Center Schools and Central College in Pella, Iowa. She engaged in additional non-degree University of Northern Iowa inCedar Falls, for recertification. Her first teaching employment was in the Aplington Central Schools. She married Fred L. Waalkes in 1948 and together they owned and managed the Aplington Hatchery. She began to teach in the DumontCentral Schools in 1968 and retired in 1987. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Aplington, where she served as a church school teacher and choir director. For many years she directed a community choir from several churchesfor special Easter cantatas. In retirement, she traveled nationally and internationally and enjoyed the Edlerhostel program. As a volunteer, she provided many hours of transportation for friends to doctors and treatments; nursing homeentertainment; and portage for Meals on Wheels.
Lillian is survived by one brother, Ike Jutting and his wife, Arlene of Ames and one sister, Carol DeYoung and her husband, Robert, of Clifton Park, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.'
