"Alex Winter
A funeral serviced for Alex Winter, 22 of Buffalo Center, was held on Friday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Alex was laid to rest in Olena Mound Cemetery, next to his parents.
Alex Michael Winter was born to Kirk Dale and Cynthia Marie (Jellinek) Winter on October 6, 1993, in Mason City. Alex was the youngest of two children. He was baptized and confirmed at First Reformed Church, attended school at and graduated from North Iowa Community School in 2012.
Alex then went on to Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, where he obtained his Associates of Applied Science in Diesel Technology in 2014. While attending school, Alex did job internships with Gary Garst and at Friesenborg & Larson.
While in elementary and middle school, Alex played hockey in Fairmont, MN. He was so passionate about the sport to where he had his teachers believing that he was doing this professionally. Alex started out as a regular player on the ice, and after much convincing to mom, he became a goalie. With him being involved, the family took trips to Brookings, SD and Rochester, MN for weekend-long tournaments.
During his time in high school, Alex was involved in many activities. Those included FFA, choir, swing choir, band, jazz band, fall play, musicals, speech, bowling and archery. By his junior year, he became interested in restoring tractors. He fully restored an Allis-Chalmers and John Deere for himself and an International Harvester for a friend. Alex would bring these restorations to the Iowa State Fair, and he won blue ribbons on them all. His success was due to all of the support, motivation, and expertise from Tracy Adams. Tracy was involved from the very beginning and was viewed as a mentor, and so much more, to Alex.
In the summer of 2009, Alex had an opportunity of a lifetime. He went to Italy, Greece and France with the program People to People. This allowed him to make new memories and make new friends. The family also went on plenty of summer road trips and week-long vacations to Orlando.
This last year, Alex was pursuing his love of flying. He was taking lessons at the Des Moines Airport and had nearly completed his Private Pilot license. His passion for flying led him to his current job with Agro Tech Aviation in Indianola. He was a member of the ground crew and enjoyed being able to get into the plane whenever possible. Doing exactly that, Friday morning, August 5, the opportunity arose for Alex, leaving us with the comfort of knowing that he died doing what he loved.
His memory will always be cherished by: his fiancée, Mikki Holstad of Indianola; sister, Samantha (Jeff) Wittmer of Estherville; grandparents, Evelyn Winter of Buffalo Center; Mike and Bonnie Jellinek of St. Paul, MN; future mother and father-in-law Mike and Ellen Holstad of Thompson; future brother and sister-in-law Logan and Cassondra Willmert and their daughter, MacKenzie, of Lisbon, IA; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Alex was preceded in death by: his parents, Kirk and Cyndi, and his grandpa, George Winter.
In lieu of flowers; memorials may be made to the Alex Winter Memorial Fund, which will be used to support his favorite interests.
Winter Funeral Home of Buffalo Center was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to www.winterfuneralhome.com "
