The Layman (Laymon) family ancestry has been researched using DNA technology, and it has been convincingly demonstrated that Daniel (b. abt 1771), Jacob (b. 15 April 1778), Joseph (b. 1765/70) and John (b. abt. 1750) were all brothers and sons of Joseph and Anna Layman of Botetourt County, Virginia. The identity of the rest of the children of this couple was sorted out by other means.
Joseph and Anna Layman may perhaps have come from Pennsylvania to Virginia. It has been established that they lived in Rockingham County, Virginia by 1774 and then Botetourt County, Virginia by 1779. Joseph was in Tennessee by 1788, when he took part in an expedition against the Cherokee Indians, led by General Joseph Martin. Joseph probably died in Sevier County, Tennessee, although perhaps he moved to Ohio along with other members of the family. He was active in the Baptist Church in Sevier County, his name being frequently mentioned in church records.
