This is a shipwreck story: John and his brothers Hendrick and Paul sailed to America: John and Hendrick aboard the Prins Maurits, and Paul on one of the accompanying ships "Beer" (Bear) and "de Geldersche Blom" (Flower of Gelderland). The ships became separated at sea and the Prins Maurits headed along the usual pathway toward Cuba, then up the American coast toward the Delaware River. However , a severe winter storm kicked up before they reached Cape May and they were swept past the bay all the way up to Fire Island off Long Island, NY, where they ran aground. After three days on desolate land, they were helped by Indians who then sent a messenger to Peter Stuyvesant for assistance. Stuyvesant himself arrived aboard a small sloop. The men and some dry goods they had salvaged safely a rrived at New Castle on 21 April 1657. Fortunately John survived this harrowing experience (described in much greater and more interesting detail on "archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com) John's sonJoh n built a house on what is now Third Street in New Castle (now Wilmington, DE). It is of typical Dutch construction, placed close to the front of the lot, built of brick, and with a centrally located fireplace and low ceilings. He received an additional 400 acres of land on the south side of Christina Creek in 1683. It is the oldest standing building in Delaware and known as the "Old Dutch Hous e." Thayer may not truly be his wife's surname and all the ancestry for Ann Thayer may therefore be bogus. In his will, John uses the phrases, "after ye Desese of Ann Thayer mother" and "if Thay er mother should remarry". Capitalization doesn't follow our rules at all so the fact that Thayer is once in caps may mean nothing at all.
