Biography first posted onto Wikitree by Devon Blean William Henry Efner was the son of Joseph Efner and Ruth Doty, a Mayflower descendant. He was born March 15, 1798, Middleburgh, Schoharie, New York. (The source of this information is unclear.) It is unknown where he received his education. Information on Ancestry tree indicates he married Mehitable Whiting March 9, 1820, source and location unknown, but possibly Monroe County, New York where his two oldest sons were born. Mehitable died in 1828 and is buried at Webster Union Cemetery, Monroe County, N.Y. A few years after the deatho f his first wife, William and his sons began heading west. On January 9, 1834, William married Sarah Johnston Ferguson, in McClean County, Illinois. This was the beginning of a new large family. Se veral children were born in Lacon, Illinois. There are records showing William as postmaster in the area. By 1840, though, the family had moved north to Albany, Whiteside, Illinois. The Historyof Whiteside County says, "the first brick building in the town was put up for a dwelling by Dr. W. H. Efner, father of Hon. D. S. Efner, in the summer of 1840." William's son Dean was trained as amaso n so perhaps the construction of the building was a family affair. In the summer of 1840 William was also part of the committee who had withdrawn from the First Presbyterian Church in order to form t he First Congregational Church of Albany. William's oldest sons stayed in Albany while William and his second family kept moving on. In 1843 his daughter Americana was born in Richland, Keokuk, Iowa , where William was a physician. Likely there was also a farm associated with his home. In 1852 he was part of the committee to organize the Richland Lodge, No. 38, A.F. & A.M. By 1870, William, Sar ah, and the youngest son Monroe were living in Washington, Poweshiek, Iowa. William died February 19, 1878, and is buried at the Macedonia Cemetery, Pottawattamie, Iowa. --------- William Henry Efne r and his first wife Mehitable Whiting had two children: '''Edmund O Efner''', (1821-1860) (killed in the Albany Tornado; and '''Dean Swift Efner''', (1822-1917.
