"IN MEMORY OF OUR DARLING "Eliza Matilda" aged 5 years. My mind goes back for years
To days long past and gone
And often brings a flood of tears
When I am all alone.
One sight I see among the rest
One sultry summer day
When Ma and I both were gone --
the children leftto play.
Our little girl, the oldest one --
For then we had but four;
Her little play had just begun
And soon she was no more.
Comin near unto my hom e,
I heard a fearful cry,
And looking forward saw the smoke,
As it ascended high.
I hurried with all my might
The cause of this to know .
And when I think of that sad sight,
The tears begin to flow.
For when I met Tilla dear,
Her clothes were all on fire.
We soon left wi thout her here
But she has gone up higher.
She suffered much, and hour or two,
And then she seemed to rest.
And then went, as children go,
To dwell among the blest.
When the hour of death had come
She kissed us all good-bye.
She told us she was going home
To dwell with God on high.< /p>
And when we think of thee, our pet
We always have to sigh.
But one thing we'll not forget
We soon shall meet on high.
John Carey
I found this poem in my mothers things after she died. It is pasted on a card board and there is faded cloth pasted around the frame. There is a little bow of ribbon pasted at the top. On back is written 'To Will & Anna from Grandma.' They were my grandparents. Grandma told me about her sisterburning to death. Her littlr brother died of fright two days later. The mother had o nly left the house long enough to go to the spring after a bucket of water." -"Branches"
