Last modified 15 Nov 2016 Categories: Ma yflower Family Member. Mary (Cooke) Rickard was related to a passenger on the Mayflower and born before 1700. Biography Mary was a daughter of Jacob Cooke and his wife Damaris (Hopkins) Cooke. Ac cording to Plymouth Vital Records, she was born 12 January 1657/8 (i.e., 1658) in Plymouth, Massachusetts. [1] In Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, Mary W. Ferris reported t he birthdate as 22 January 1658;[2] the 10-day difference is apparently due to her accounting for the 10-day date shift whenthe calendar was changed in 1752. Mary married John Rickard, son of John Rickard, in Plymouth in a bout 1678. There has been some uncertainty as to whether Mary Cooke married that John Rickard or hisfirst cousin John Rickard, the son of Giles Rickard. Both men had wives named Mary. In an a rticle entitled "Which John Rickard married Mary Cooke?" in the August 1983 Mayflower Quarterly,[3] Eugene Stratton presented evidence that Mary Cooke's husband was John the son of John. As desc ribed by "jrich" in a personal genealogy page, Stratton based this conclusion primarily on a comparison of signatures.[4] Children John Rickard and Mary Cooke are recorded as the parents of seven children. All but the last two named are listed in Plymouth Vital Records:[5] John Rickard, born 26 February 1679.[6] He apparently died before February 1684. Mercy Rickard, born 3 February 1682 . [7] John Rickard, born 3 February 1684. [8] Ester (or Hester) Rickard, born 1 April 1691. James Rickard, born 25 or 26 September 1696. Elizabeth Rickard; not in Vital Records, but named in her f ather's will.[9] Mary Rickard; not in Vital Records, but named in her father's will[9] Name Name: Mary /Cooke/ [10] Name: Mary /Cooke Rickard /[11][12][13][14][15][16] Birth: Date: 12 Jan 1657 P lace: Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States[17][18][19][20][21] Death Mary's husband John Rickard made his on 20 April1711, and his estate was inventoried 20 June 1712. His will prov ided bequests Mary, sons John and James, and daughters Mercy [married name not legible], Mary Rickard, Hester Rickard, and Elizabeth Rickard. [9] Mary died, not long after her husband, on 28 Aug ust 1712. She is buried near him, at Burial Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Her gravestone inscription reads: [22] Here Lyes Buried Ye Body of Mary Rickard Aged 55 Years Decesd August Ye 28th 17 12 Death: Date: 25 Aug 1712 Place: Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States[23][24][25] Sources ↑ Plymouth Vital Records, page 662: "Mary, the daughter of Jacob Cooke was born the 12th of Jan 1657/8" ↑ Source: #S109, Vol. 2, Page 246 ↑ Stratton, Eugene.
