JOHN P. HAGGARD, 1806 - 1851 John P. Haggard, son of Samuel an Eilzabeth H. Peterson Haggard was born on December 27, 1806 at Clarksville, in Montgomery, County Tennessee and died on June 26, 1851 atCarthage, in Hancock County, Illinois. He married Martha A. Kington on January 7, 1836 in Hancock County, Illinois. He was the namesake of his grandfather, John Haggard that had been killed in Decemb er of 1792 by Indians, near the site of present day Nashville, Tennessee John P. and Martha Kington Haggard moved to Carthage, in Hancock County, Illinois after their marriage. He was engaged in the Mercantile Business while in Carthage, and was a man of character and influence. He was elected Sheriff in 1841 but declined to serve because of ill health. In 1843 he was elected County Treasurer and in 1844 was also elected County Assessor and served in both offices. After his death on June 26, 1851, Martha and her family took his body back to the village of Plymouth in Hancock County, Illinois and buried him in the Rosemont Cemetery at Plymouth. Martha continued to reside at Plymouth until the close of the Civil War. She then moved to White Cloud, Doniphan County, Kansas where she died som etime after the year 1898. John P. and Martha Haggard had nine Children encluding a set of twins.
