In 1855, however, he came to Madison County, purchasing a farmof one hundred and eighty acres six miles north of Winterset in what wasthen Madison Township but is now Douglas Township. He improved theproperty and operated it for four years, on the expiration of whichperiod he disposed of the place and took up his abode near Earlham, inMadison Township, there continuing toreside throughout the remainder ofhis active business career. the last twenty years of his life were spentin honorable retirement at Earlham.... in his passing the community lostone of its representative agriculturalists and esteemed citizens."
The first Quaker Meeting house in Earlham was on land owned byMartin and his wife Anne Elizabeth Wroe.
Enlisted in Company A,39th Iowa Infantry 14 August, 1862, and wasdischarged May 27, 1863. The muster roll states that he had brown hairand blue eyes, a dark complexion, and was 5'11" tall.
He is buried in North Branch Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
