LifeSketch: William Strother and his wife Margaret Thornton were close friends and neighbors of Augustine Washington, father of George Washington, first President of the USA. Their farms adjoined and after the death of William Strother in 1725, two hundred eighty acres of this homestead with its two-story, 8 bedroom house was sold to Augustine Washington and became Ferry Farms. George Washington lived here in his youth. The will of Augustine Washington reads: "I give to my son George Washington and his heirs the land I now live on which I purchased of the Executors of Mr. William Strother, deceased. And one moiety of my land lying on Deep Run and ten negro Slaves...." The will is dated 11 April 1743. Anthony Strother is among the witnesses to the will. (Genealogy of Virginia Families, vol. IV, 1981, from Tyler's Quarterly Genealogical Magazine). This is not Mt. Vernon which is the land customarily associated w/George Washington. Mt. The boyhood home in King George county was on the Strother estate, located not in the lowlands along the Rappahannock as is the so-called Washington Farm, but on the upland well back northward from that river.
