Notities over Donald Ruadh"bogainn" (Donald Ruadh"bogainn") MACDONALD (MCDONALD)

Notes from Fair is the Place (MacDonald): He was about 12 when he came to Nova Scotia with his parents. He sta y behind on the farm at Fisher's Grant in the 1790s after his mother d ied and after his father left for Arisaig. In 1798, as a young man, h e and his 2 brothers and 2 sisters sailed across the Northumberland St rait to Judique. He claimed 380 acres on the south side of LIttle Jud ique harbour. He built a one-room log cabin just above the shore (whe re the Lower short road turns towards the wharf) in that year and marr ied Mary MacDonald, daughter of Alasdair (son of James of Baillie).aft er an initial period of settlement, Donald Ruadh would have grown som e crops and also fished out of Little Judique harbour. He was known a s an industrious man. When his children were quite small, his wife wa s alone in their cabin and some Micmacs came to pay a visit (the India ns often came to camp above the harbour in the summer). According to oral tradition, when the Indians saw a barrel of potatoes near the doo r, they picked them up and wondered what they were. After puzzling ov er this a minute, they began throwing them at one another which appare ntly terrified Mary and her small children. Donald's family grew rapi dly and soon he built a second house (probably of framed timber) abov e the bank near the shore where the small ponds are. A number of yea rs later, the family moved into a bigger house coser to the present Lo wer Shore Road(none of these early houses stands today but their found ation can still be found). He was known to have gone spearing eels ev ery year at Livingstone Pond and would salt the eels in large barrels for the winter. No doubt, his family's reputation at the "bogainn's" meant that he had many skills as a fisherman. In the 1830's, he bega n to divide up the land among his 3 sons, having deeds drawn up and gi ving each son an equal share. By the time he was probably retiring fr om full-time farming. Donald Ruadh lived to be a very old man and whe n he was dying, his daughter-in-law Anne (wife of John Jr) sent for th e priest, Fr. Kenneth MacDonald. When the priest arrived, the dying m an got up to greet and exclaimed "A n'e seo an duine tinn?" (Is this t he sick man?). Despite this, he took the sacrament of dying and not l ong after, he died.
