LifeSketch: Elizabeth Stuart was the second daughter of King Charles I and his wife, Henrietta Maria of France. She was named in honour of her aunt Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia but her family called her "Temperance" for her kind nature. mily were split up. With Queen Henrietta Maria in Holland and King Charles out of London, this left Elizabeth and her baby brother Harry neglected in the royal nurseries at St James's Palace but were refused permission to join their father when the Royal court moved to Oxford. They thus became tragic casualties of the war and from age 6 until her death, Elizabeth was a prisoner of the English Parliament, albeit a well cared for one. Parliament ensured the children were educated as befitted their rank and Elizabeth demonstrated a flair for languages and religion. During this time, their guardianship was allocated by Parliament to various different nobles; however, they were allowed occasional visits from their father and once were even allowed to visit him in Reading.11, the French ambassador described the Elizabeth as a "budding young beauty" who had "grace, dignity, intelligence and sensibility" that enabled her to judge the different people she met and understand different points of view. Her strength of character stood in firm contrast to her continued poor health.beth wrote a long letter to Parliament requesting permission to join her sister Mary in Holland but to no avail. On 29 January 1649, an emotional final meeting occurred between the 13 year-old Elizabeth, 8 year-old Harry and their father and Elizabeth wrote an poignant account of the meeting that was found among her possessions after her death. Following the execution of their father, Elizabeth and Harry became unwanted charges. Nobody wanted the responsibility or indeed expense of raising the two Stuart children. Parliament refused to allow them to go to Holland and finally they ended up at Penshurst Place in Kent, under the care of The Earl of Leicester.ment to move Elizabeth to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight as a hostage. The Princess had complained that her health would not permit her to travel but it went ahead anyway. According to legend she was caught in a shower on the bowling green, this led to a chill which turned to pneumonia but it is possible that she was already ailing. She died on 8 September 1650 with her head on a Bible which her father had given her. An examination of her remains conducted in Victorian times revealed that she had suffered from rickets, which had resulted in shoulder and back deformities, knock knees and pigeon toes which would have made it difficult for her to walk. The adolescent Elizabeth had a long face, reddish-brown hair and a protruding jaw, possibly an inheritance from her mother's Habsburg ancestry.ng woman, lying with her cheek on a Bible open to words from the Gospel of Matthew: "Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest".
